Hello,

Just bought an open-box HP Tango from a local retailer.
The printer didn't come with cartridges so I bought some myself. However, when installed, the light bar turns amber and the cartridge light on top keeps flashing amber. When I check the web interface, the printer indicates "Use SETUP Cartridges".

I have done some searching and it seems that the printer needs these setup cartridges to be configured for the first time. The support page HP has on this subject mentions to contact HP, though when I try to do so I am redirected here because the warranty apparently expired. When I try to dispute this and submit the form (I have valid proof of purchase), I get an error message that HP support is currently not available.

I am not able to return the printer for a refund. Is there a method to work around the setup cartridge requirement or can HP send me these cartridges to go through initial setup?

In addition I am genuinely curious on why exactly these printers need these setup cartridges to function at all. It just seems like such a user-hostile thing to implement that there must be a good reason why it was done this way.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I have already figured out the solution to my problem. To bypass the SETUP cartridge requirement on the HP Tango, do the following:

  1. Open the cartridge door.
  2. Press and hold the small wireless button at the back of the printer for about 3 seconds (it is just below the power button).
  3. Close the cartridge door.

The printer will now accept the cartridges.

Would still love to know why this was implemented by HP, if someone has more information, please leave a reply.
