I am trying to install an M428 via a USB connection. I have tried the 3 offered installers. Each one reaches the point of configuring the device at which time it fails to see the attached printer. However Windows (10, 22H2) does and installs a Universal Driver and a limited form of the scanner.
However, I need the I.R.I.S. - TWAIN scanner function to be available, which will install with the complete HP package. The MS flavored one does not.
The HP installer just sits there (offering to exit and create a link to finish at another time after making a connection when the cable is connected), and the MS flavored one happily installs a working printer (selecting the universal driver).
I experimented with HP's Print and Scan Doctor and even at one point allowed it to seek and install the driver set again (that resulted in 2 complete install sets). But that package reported an error, stopping at "Device Status" each time (print test and scanning test). It is possible to "skip" and go beyond that point. But that HP package did find the printer, however it clearly could not fully communicate with it in the manner HP expected.
I also tried to do a firmware update, but that package also could not find the printer.
As a printer I can deal with the results, leaving well enough alone. However the user needs a Twain scanner for a core application. This is the reason the unit was purchased. This all previously worked on the user's Window 7 machine, which is being permanently decommissioned. In fact, I recollect that that install went quite smoothly at the time.

Similar to, but over 50% larger than, the other installers I had tried. The biggest diff I saw was the use of a Visual C++ redistributable, V17. I wonder if the other installers were sitting there waiting for a function embeddeed in this redistributable. When I have more time, I will check if the firmware upgrade now goes forward too.
Going foward, I will be always looking for a similar driver (and associated elements) package for HP printers, if the "regular" method has a problem. Usually I pick the offered "Full", as I am not a fan of the "Smart" installers.
It called the scanner by a different name than the other installers. Interestingly, there is what it installed and the other (failed complete install) scanner presented as available. Trivial to select the good one.
