Since the HP Smart APP updated on my Mac to the latest version 16.1.1,  Aug 18, 2023,  I am unable to scan from the APP. I verified that printer and scanning work on the printer. Also I have the latest firmware and drivers. I finally figured the problem was related to HP Smart scanner needs to be configured with Scan settings as follows: Set the Input Source Field
