My HP Smart Tank 5100 series printer will not allow me to readjust to a custom print size. How do I fix this?

There are ways (methods) to create a custom print size.

The setup relies on (and is related to) the content type (document / photo) and the application or software you are using to create the print.

HP Smart, HP App, Microsoft Photos, and Print Pictures, for example, do not support "Custom" sizes, though you can select from a list of print sizes within the application.

Example - HP App - Windows - Print Photos - Simple Photo Print

Orientation = Portrait

Photo Size   = 4x6 inches

-- What else? --

True custom size printing is possible.

What you do -- and how well the Custom print size option is supported -- depends on the content type, your application or software, and -- usually -- whether you have managed to install the full driver printer software.

Printing Preferences provides access and support for the full range of Printing Preferences and Custom Paper Size form creation and use.

Finally, paper size and type play a part, too.  Tray and Paper settings should be configured ahead of time.  If possible, the "Custom Size" option should be selected in EWS or at the printer control panel (for those printers that support printer control panel options of this type).

The following is not "everything" -- it does include the basics.

-- Note --

Ask if you need information on

  • Installing the full driver printer software
  • Setting the Default Printer

Start...

==========================

Load Paper / Load Media

Load the paper / envelopes according to the instructions in the user guide

User Guide - HP Smart Tank 5100

Load Paper and access EWS - Starting on Page 17

Next,

==========================

EWS - Tray and Paper

EWS > HP Document / How-to (InkJet Printers – Basic Information)

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section Open the EWS over a local network orientation

OR

HP Laser Printers - Using the Printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Alternate EWS format - Select newer InkJet printers and select LaserJet printers

-- Reminders --

If asked enter the printer’s PIN number –

The default PIN might be located on the back or inside the printer (ink access area).

See your printer's user guide for additional information.

and

Open your Browser

Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Note → If the browser security will not let you open EWS, try a different browser.

Section Paper > Trays > Select Tray(s) to configure

Next (as available)

Section Print > Default Print Options > Select default options / tray

Tray and Paper – Paper Size / Paper Type / Paper Weight

Notes

HP Smart / HP App require that paper size / type is rechecked / adjusted before content is opened for print.

Newer printer?  Touchscreen Printer Control Panel locked against making changes?  Try username "admin" and the PIN located on the sticker on the inside of the front door of the printer.

Trays

  • If the printer lacks a second tray, all paper / types are supported in the single available tray.
  • Printers that include a Photo Tray generally restrict the paper sizes and paper type supported in that tray.

4)  -- Windows -- Printer Properties

Ensure that Printer Properties is set to your installed HP driver and not the IPP / Microsoft drivers.

Windows 10

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on Printer > Printer Properties > Tab Advanced

Windows 11

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Select Printer

Printer Properties > Tab Advanced

  • Driver:  Select the HP driver as opposed to the Microsoft / IPP class driver
  • Reprint later:  Select Keep all documents
  • All Jobs Default:  Printing Defaults

-- Example - Printer Properties -- Driver / Printing Defaults --

① → Driver

 → Optional - Printing Defaults
