HP Smart Tank 520 All-in-One Printer

I have a MacBook M1 Air and I have purchased an HP Smart Tank 520 All-in-One Color Printer. However, when I open the HP Smart app, I am unable to connect my MacBook Air to my HP printer using a USB cable. I have tried different drivers, but nothing seems to be working. What should I do

Hi @HimanshuBisht,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To connect your HP Smart Tank 520 printer to your MacBook Air M1 using a USB cable and resolve the connection issue, here are steps and considerations you can follow:

Troubleshooting Steps:

Ensure USB Cable and Ports:

  • Use a high-quality USB cable that supports data transfer.
  • Ensure both ends of the USB cable are securely plugged in — one end into the printer and the other into your MacBook Air.

Check USB Port Compatibility:

  • Since your MacBook Air M1 has USB-C ports, make sure you are using a USB-C to USB-B cable (standard printer USB cable) or a suitable adapter if needed.

Install HP Smart App:

  • Download and install the latest version of the HP Smart App from the Mac App Store. This app will help manage your printer and facilitate setup.

Printer Preparation:

  • Turn on your HP Smart Tank 520 printer and ensure it is in a ready state.

Connect Printer to MacBook Air:

  • Connect the USB cable from the printer to your MacBook Air's USB-C port (using an adapter if necessary).

Open HP Smart App:

  • Launch the HP Smart App on your MacBook Air.

Add Printer:

  • In the HP Smart App, click on the Plus sign (+) to add a new printer.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to select your printer model (HP Smart Tank 520) and confirm the connection method as USB.

Driver Installation:

  • The HP Smart App should automatically detect and install the necessary drivers for your printer. Follow any prompts to complete the driver installation.

Check System Preferences:

  • Open System Preferences on your MacBook Air.
  • Go to Printers & Scanners.
  • Your HP Smart Tank 520 printer should appear in the list on the left-hand side. Make sure it is listed and selected as your default printer.

Test Printing:

  • Try printing a test page or document from your MacBook Air to verify the connection and functionality.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I followed the steps exactly as you mentioned. However, when I open the HP Smart app, it's unable to detect my printer. I can see my printer's name under "Printers & Scanners" in settings and preferences, but it doesn't show up in the HP Smart app. As a result, I'm unable to print. What should I do about this?
