HP Smart Tank 7005 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

In the printer manual it says on page 86 that "To preserve battery power, you can enable Auto-Off, even when the printer is connected or if the Wi-Fi connection is activated.", but it doesn't say how.
Can you help me?
In fact, the printer turns on once a month at 6:00 AM, and since it is connected to the wifi, it never turns off by itself.

Thanks

Hi @PiZeta,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS):

  • Find your printer's IP address by printing a configuration page from the printer's control panel.
  • Open a web browser and enter the IP address in the address bar to access the EWS.

Log in to EWS:

  • Use the appropriate credentials to log in to the Embedded Web Server (if prompted).

Navigate to Power Management Settings:

  • In the EWS, look for the Settings or Setup tab.
  • Find Power Management or Energy Settings.

Enable Auto-Off:

  • Within the Power Management settings, you should find an option to Enable Auto-Off.
  • Select this option to make sure the printer will automatically turn off even when connected to a network or if the Wi-Fi connection is activated.

Save Settings:

  • After enabling Auto-Off, ensure you save your settings.

I hope this helps.

Hi Kuroi_Kenshi,

thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately (as you can see from the screenshot below) the auto-off is already set. Furthermore, in the notes it is explicitly stated that "if the printer is connected to a network or the wi-fi is active, the auto-off function is automatically disabled".
Unfortunately this means that when the printer turns on by itself at night, it no longer turns off.
In the instruction manual, however, it is stated that it is possible to make it turn off automatically even if connected to a network or with wi-fi active.

How do you do it?
Thanks

Hi @PiZeta,

Thank you for the response.

Here's what you can try next:

1. Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) Again:

Open a web browser and type your printer’s IP address.

Log in if prompted (username usually: admin; password may be blank or on a label on your printer).

2. Go to Advanced Settings (or Energy Settings):

Navigate to: Settings > Preferences > Energy Settings (may vary slightly).

Ensure “Auto-Off” is Enabled.

3. Override Network Behavior:

Some firmware versions support custom timeouts and deeper settings. Try this:

In the same Energy Settings or Advanced tab, look for:

Sleep Timer / Energy Save Mode

"Auto-Off override for network activity"

If available, set it to Enabled or Yes.

If you don’t see this option, the firmware may not expose it by default.

Why It Wakes Up at 6 AM?

This could be due to:

Cloud Print / HP Instant Ink status checks

Scheduled maintenance or diagnostic routines

Some routers “ping” networked devices daily (WOL — Wake on LAN)

You can try assigning the printer a Static IP Address and disabling Web Services (like Instant Ink/Cloud Printing) if not used:

Go to Network > Advanced Settings

Disable Web Services

Set Manual IP Address (to avoid frequent pings)

I hope this helps.

Regarding point 3 of your message, I don't see the override network option.
How do I make it appear (if it's hidden by default as you said)?

Thanks

Hi,

today (21-June-2025) at 6:00am my HP 7005 starts itself.  Once again. I discovered printer starts every 21st of each month at 6:00am.

That's ok if printer then switch off itself again. Unfortunately it doesn't because when it starts early morning it connect to wifi and stay there, because settings says "auto-off works only if printer is NOT connect to network or Wifi".

It's a shame that the manual says not to leave the printer on if you're not using it!!

I think this is a BIG Firmware ISSUE. I want a flag to override this problem, to say printer "hey, switch off also if you are connect anywhere! (network, wifi, whatelse..."

Otherwise i must check my printer every 21st of each month, or disconnect the power when i don't use the printer (VERY BORING and DISTURBING).

No good!

Hi @PiZeta

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The auto-off function for the HP Smart Tank 7005 is designed to conserve power. However, it only works when the printer is not connected to a network or Wifi. This means that if your printer connects to Wifi, it will stay on and not automatically turn off.

To manage your printer’s power usage effectively, you can try the following:

Scheduled Shutdown: Check if there is an option to schedule the printer to turn off at specific times. This might be a setting you can configure within the printer settings or through the HP software.

Manual Intervention: If scheduling is not possible, manually turn off the printer when it's not needed, especially if it connects to Wifi and stays on.

Use HP Smart App: Sometimes using the HP Smart App can give you more control over the printer’s settings, including power management. Ensure you have the latest version of the app.

Here are a couple of workarounds you might consider:

  1. Use a Smart Plug
Set up a smart plug with a schedule to cut power to the printer after a certain time (e.g., 6:30 AM on the 21st). This way, you won’t have to manually unplug it.
  2. Disable Wi-Fi Temporarily
If you don’t need the printer online all the time, you can disable Wi-Fi before powering it off. This allows Auto-Off to function as intended.
  3. Submit Feedback to HP
Since this behavior is firmware-controlled, I recommend submitting feedback directly through the HP Support Community or via HP Smart app. The more users report this, the more likely HP is to consider a firmware update that allows Auto-Off even when connected.

I completely agree that a toggle to allow Auto-Off regardless of network status would be a smart and user-friendly improvement.

If my response helped, please mark it as an Accepted Solution It helps others and spreads support. 💙 Also, tapping "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" makes a big difference! Thanks! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
