HP Smart Tank 7005 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 11

I have been using an HP Smart Tank 7005 printer for almost 2 years now, and I am really satisfied with it. However, since day one, it has never turned off automatically, contrary to what is stated in the manual (auto-off after 2 hours of inactivity).

I have already gone through all the menus, I have enabled the auto-off feature, but there is a small message indicating that the printer will never go to sleep if it is connected to Wi-Fi, which is the case for mine.

It regularly happens that the printer stays on for several days (even though it goes to sleep, it does not turn off). I believe there is a hidden menu that allows you to force it to turn off even when connected to Wi-Fi. Could someone please help me?

Hi  @DaScoub

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I  understand how  it must be to expect your printer to power down automatically, only to find it stays on for days at a time.

A few  points to ensure we’re on the same page:

  • When you say the printer “goes to sleep,” do you mean the display dims but the power light stays on?
  • Have you noticed if the printer wakes up on its own (for example, when connected to Wi‑Fi or receiving updates)?
  • Is the auto‑off option enabled in the Energy Settings menu, or only in the HP Smart app/HP App?

Here are few steps you can try:

  1. Firmware update: Make sure the printer is running the latest firmware. Sometimes auto‑off behavior is corrected in updates.
  2. Energy settings reset: Go into the printer’s control panel → Setup → Preferences → Energy Save/Auto‑Off, and toggle the setting off, then back on.
  3. Network settings check: Since Wi‑Fi can prevent auto‑off, try disabling “Web Services” (like ePrint) temporarily to see if the printer powers down as expected.
  4. Manual power cycle: If auto‑off still doesn’t work, you can set a routine to manually power down using the physical button  this ensures the printer isn’t drawing unnecessary power.

I hope this helps.
