HP Smart Tank 7005 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 11

I have been using an HP Smart Tank 7005 printer for almost 2 years now, and I am really satisfied with it. However, since day one, it has never turned off automatically, contrary to what is stated in the manual (auto-off after 2 hours of inactivity).

I have already gone through all the menus, I have enabled the auto-off feature, but there is a small message indicating that the printer will never go to sleep if it is connected to Wi-Fi, which is the case for mine.

It regularly happens that the printer stays on for several days (even though it goes to sleep, it does not turn off). I believe there is a hidden menu that allows you to force it to turn off even when connected to Wi-Fi. Could someone please help me?

Hi  @DaScoub

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I  understand how  it must be to expect your printer to power down automatically, only to find it stays on for days at a time.

A few  points to ensure we’re on the same page:

  • When you say the printer “goes to sleep,” do you mean the display dims but the power light stays on?
  • Have you noticed if the printer wakes up on its own (for example, when connected to Wi‑Fi or receiving updates)?
  • Is the auto‑off option enabled in the Energy Settings menu, or only in the HP Smart app/HP App?

Here are few steps you can try:

  1. Firmware update: Make sure the printer is running the latest firmware. Sometimes auto‑off behavior is corrected in updates.
  2. Energy settings reset: Go into the printer’s control panel → Setup → Preferences → Energy Save/Auto‑Off, and toggle the setting off, then back on.
  3. Network settings check: Since Wi‑Fi can prevent auto‑off, try disabling “Web Services” (like ePrint) temporarily to see if the printer powers down as expected.
  4. Manual power cycle: If auto‑off still doesn’t work, you can set a routine to manually power down using the physical button  this ensures the printer isn’t drawing unnecessary power.

I hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for your fast reply.

Here are my answers to your first questions :

A few  points to ensure we’re on the same page:

  • When you say the printer “goes to sleep,” do you mean the display dims but the power light stays on?
  • =>Yes
  • Have you noticed if the printer wakes up on its own (for example, when connected to Wi‑Fi or receiving updates)?
  • => I don't think so, usually, my wife or my childrens powers it up, and forget to switch it off
  • Is the auto‑off option enabled in the Energy Settings menu, or only in the HP Smart app/HP App?
  • =>i've not found anything in the smart app, except when i go to advanced parameters, and i opens a new page directly on the printer, the same one as when you access the printer via its IP address.DaScoub_1-1782160369847.png

     DaScoub_0-1782160342445.png

The printer is on the last firware update (SAYAWLPP1N002.2610A.00).

I've already tried to change every setting several times (auto off and energy saving).

Web services were active, and i've just disabled them.

To be honnest, having to switch off manually my printer doesn't seem to be an option long term speaking. I really don't understand why natively, the printer wouldn't switch off when connected to the network... The message on the second screenshot says : "The printer will automatically turn off after a period of inactivity to reduce energy consumption. This feature is automatically disabled when the printer is connected to a computer or mobile device, a network, or a fax line (if supported)."

On another post, i've found someone with the same problem, and it seems that a technician contacted him via pm to access some hidden option to force the printer to switch off even if connected to the network it seems, but i might be mistaken.

Thank you so much for the update. @DaScoub

Could you please try a few troubleshooting steps and give us an update?

1. Disable All Background Network Activity

Even minimal background communication can prevent auto-off:

  • Open the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS)
  • Navigate to:
    • Web Services → Disable Web Services
    • Instant Ink / HP+ (if enabled) → disable temporarily
  • On your router:
    • Check if the printer is constantly exchanging data (active device list)

2. Remove All Devices and Re-add (Network Reset Scenario)

Devices on the network can “wake” the printer unintentionally:

  • On all connected PCs/phones:
    • Remove the printer from Printers & Scanners / HP Smart
  • Then on the printer:
    • Go to Setup → Network → Restore Network Settings
  • Reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi after 1–2 minutes
  • Add it back to only one device initially for testing

3. Check for Pending or Hidden Print Jobs

Even invisible background jobs can keep the printer awake:

  • Access EWS → Tools / Status / Queue
  • Ensure there are no stuck or pending jobs
  • On your computer:
    • Clear all print queues completely
    • Restart the system

4. Reconfigure Power Settings via EWS (Deep Adjustment)

From your screenshot, power timings are present but overridden:

  • In EWS → Energy Settings / Power Management:
    • Set:
      • Sleep mode to shortest duration (e.g., 5 minutes)
      • Auto-off to enabled (if selectable)
  • Save settings and restart the printer

5. Firmware Reinitialization

Even though you’re on the latest firmware, power-state logic can get stuck:

  • Turn the printer ON
  • Disconnect the power cord from the rear
  • Wait 2–3 minutes
  • Press and hold the Power button for 20–30 seconds
  • Reconnect directly to a wall outlet

6. Test with Network Completely Disabled (Isolation Test)

This is the most important diagnostic step:

  • Disconnect Wi-Fi from the printer
  • Do not connect it to any device
  • Leave the printer idle for 30–60 minutes

Have a great day!

4 - Sleep mode is already on 5min

I don't have "enabled" for auto off, but only timers...

5 - reseting the firmware didn't change anything either

6 - How can i disconnect the wifi from the printer ? it seems i can only disable it, but if i do so, how can i connect to it afterwards ?

Hi  @DaScoub,

Thank you for the detailed follow‑up and for sharing screenshots  that helps a lot. I understand how it is when the printer refuses to power down automatically despite all the settings being in place. Let me clarify a few important points :

From the message you saw in the screenshot, the printer’s firmware is designed to disable auto‑off when connected to a network, computer, or fax line. This is becuase the printer must remain “reachable” for jobs, updates, or remote commands. That’s why even if you set timers, the printer will only enter Sleep Mode (dimmed display, low power draw) but not fully shut down.

Sleep mode optimization: Since auto‑off is disabled on network, the best is to set the shortest sleep timer (5 minutes, as you’ve done) and disable services (Web Services, Wi‑Fi Direct) to minimize wake‑ups.

HP does not allow end-users to override the underlying service menu on the HP Smart Tank 7005.

I hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for your answer.

So, if i understand, you're saying that it's "normal" that the printer doesn't switch off when it's connected to the network.

Can you explain me in which case a network printer shouldn't be connect to the network ? I really don't understand what's going on. The firmware should at least have an option to force shutdown, for example after 15min on sleep.

I'm really disappointed of the situation, moreover nowadays as companies aim to reduce their carbon footprint.

Hi @DaScoub,

Let me clarify further on this the HP Smart Tank 7005 the Auto-Off This feature turns the printer off after 2 hours of inactivity to help reduce energy use. Auto-Off turns the printer off completely, so you must use the Power button to turn the printer back on.
Kindly confirm if you have used this feature before ?
If your printer supports this energy saving feature, Auto-Off is automatically enabled or disabled depending on printer capabilities and connection options. Even when Auto-Off is disabled, the printer enters Sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity to help reduce energy use.  Auto-Off is enabled when the printer is turned on, if the printer does not have network, fax or Wi-Fi Direct capability, or is not using these capabilities.  Auto-Off is disabled when a printer’s Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct capability is turned on or when a printer with fax, USB, or Ethernet network capability establishes a fax, USB, or Ethernet network connection.

Kindly try one more check to confirm if the Sleep Mode and Auto‑Off options are visible in your printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS). Please follow these below steps:

Adjust Sleep Mode and Auto‑Off

Open the EWS (Embedded Web Server). See the guide “To access and use EWS. ( On how to access EWS - Click here  - page number :  45. ) "

Click the Settings tab.

From the left menu, select Power Management.

Click Energy Save Mode or Auto‑Off.

Select the desired time, then click Apply.

Schedule On/Off (recommended for energy savings)

This feature allows you to automatically turn the printer on or off at specific times and days. For example, you can schedule it to turn on at 8 a.m. and off at 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, saving energy during nights and weekends.

Steps:

Open the EWS.

Click the Settings tab.

From the left menu, select Power Management.

Click Schedule On/Off.

Specify the desired times and days, then click Apply.
