HP Smart Tank 7005 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 11

I have been using an HP Smart Tank 7005 printer for almost 2 years now, and I am really satisfied with it. However, since day one, it has never turned off automatically, contrary to what is stated in the manual (auto-off after 2 hours of inactivity).

I have already gone through all the menus, I have enabled the auto-off feature, but there is a small message indicating that the printer will never go to sleep if it is connected to Wi-Fi, which is the case for mine.

It regularly happens that the printer stays on for several days (even though it goes to sleep, it does not turn off). I believe there is a hidden menu that allows you to force it to turn off even when connected to Wi-Fi. Could someone please help me?

Hi  @DaScoub

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I  understand how  it must be to expect your printer to power down automatically, only to find it stays on for days at a time.

A few  points to ensure we’re on the same page:

  • When you say the printer “goes to sleep,” do you mean the display dims but the power light stays on?
  • Have you noticed if the printer wakes up on its own (for example, when connected to Wi‑Fi or receiving updates)?
  • Is the auto‑off option enabled in the Energy Settings menu, or only in the HP Smart app/HP App?

Here are few steps you can try:

  1. Firmware update: Make sure the printer is running the latest firmware. Sometimes auto‑off behavior is corrected in updates.
  2. Energy settings reset: Go into the printer’s control panel → Setup → Preferences → Energy Save/Auto‑Off, and toggle the setting off, then back on.
  3. Network settings check: Since Wi‑Fi can prevent auto‑off, try disabling “Web Services” (like ePrint) temporarily to see if the printer powers down as expected.
  4. Manual power cycle: If auto‑off still doesn’t work, you can set a routine to manually power down using the physical button  this ensures the printer isn’t drawing unnecessary power.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.

Hi, thanks for your fast reply.

Here are my answers to your first questions :

A few  points to ensure we’re on the same page:

  • When you say the printer “goes to sleep,” do you mean the display dims but the power light stays on?
  • =>Yes
  • Have you noticed if the printer wakes up on its own (for example, when connected to Wi‑Fi or receiving updates)?
  • => I don't think so, usually, my wife or my childrens powers it up, and forget to switch it off
  • Is the auto‑off option enabled in the Energy Settings menu, or only in the HP Smart app/HP App?
  • =>i've not found anything in the smart app, except when i go to advanced parameters, and i opens a new page directly on the printer, the same one as when you access the printer via its IP address.DaScoub_1-1782160369847.png

The printer is on the last firware update (SAYAWLPP1N002.2610A.00).

I've already tried to change every setting several times (auto off and energy saving).

Web services were active, and i've just disabled them.

To be honnest, having to switch off manually my printer doesn't seem to be an option long term speaking. I really don't understand why natively, the printer wouldn't switch off when connected to the network... The message on the second screenshot says : "The printer will automatically turn off after a period of inactivity to reduce energy consumption. This feature is automatically disabled when the printer is connected to a computer or mobile device, a network, or a fax line (if supported)."

On another post, i've found someone with the same problem, and it seems that a technician contacted him via pm to access some hidden option to force the printer to switch off even if connected to the network it seems, but i might be mistaken.
