Hello,

Ive had this printer sitting new in a box for a while and decided to set it up this weekend, and the printer carriage wont move? I saw it move 1 time back and forth when I first plugged it in after removing all the packing materials as laid out in the set up instructions. But now that I have reached the "Install Print heads" portion of the set up it will not move when I open the Ink access door, or when the system is turned on. I'm not sure that the unit is sensing that the door is open or something, but I can't finish setting the unit up, and its already out of warranty even though I just opened the box. Any help would be appreciated. Ive already done the resets and stuff so im guessing this is just a dead unit and im out the money unfortunately

Hi @Powpownder,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It looks like you are encountering an issue where the printer carriage in your HP Smart Tank 7301 won't move during setup. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshooting this problem:

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet and the back of the printer.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds before plugging it back in.
  • Turn on the printer again and check if the carriage moves when you open the ink access door.

Double-check Packing Material Removal:

  • Ensure that all packing materials and tape have been removed from inside the printer, particularly around the ink carriage and print head area. Sometimes, small pieces of tape might be overlooked.

Ensure Proper Setup:

  • Verify that the printer is placed on a flat, stable surface. Uneven surfaces might hinder the carriage movement.
  • Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet, as power strips might cause power issues.

Manual Carriage Movement Check:

  • With the printer off, gently open the ink access door and manually move the carriage left and right. Do this carefully without forcing it, to ensure there are no obstructions.

Firmware Update:

  • If the printer connects to a network, check for any available Official HP® Support and install them, as it might resolve software issues causing the carriage to stick.

Reset Printer Settings:

  • Sometimes, resetting the printer settings to default can help.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
