Ever sink I purchased 9010 inkjet 2 years ago, I've had issues with HP Smart app. Yes, both my laptop and HP are on same network. When I open the Smart app, it  often just buffers, or it opens and scan just continues to buffer and never opens or mobile fax never opens or printer never opens. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Smart app multiple times. I have followed instructions on various sites. The problems recur regularly but not consistently. The printer is therefore completely unreliable. It's plugged into my laptop. Is there a way to circumvent this terrible app?

?

Not sure whether the printer is connected to the network or whether it's plugged into your computer.

==============================

1)  Printer connected to your network and to Web Services

If the first is true, that is, your printer is connected to your network and to the Internet (via Web Services) --

HP Smart and HP App (the recently / currently released replacement for HP Smart) are both equipped with both a Repair and a Reset option (in Windows).

- Printer Application - HP Smart – Windows –

Check / Reset HP Smart

Check / Reset HP App

NOTES – Skipping Steps

  • If you skip one or more steps and nothing works, consider going back and adding any missed checkpoints.
  • Ignore anything not relevant, unwanted, disliked.

Start

===================================

Windows - High Contrast / Dark Mode

  • If you are running High Contrast or “Dark Mode” and one or more apps will not open at all, try switching to None (for contrast) or “Light” for mode.
  • After the application opens, set up the printer –
  • Later, if you wish to do so, try setting the mode back to your preferred setting.

References - Windows 11

Settings > Personalization > Colors > Choose your mode = Light

Scroll down

Related settings

Select Contrast Themes > None

===================================

Windows – Updates

 Check / Run Windows Updates > Install any pending updates.

If any updates are installed, consider Restarting the computer.

===================================

Remove HP App / HP Smart from Startup

Open the Task Manager

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc

OR

Right-Click Windows Start > Task Manager

Select Startup apps

If HP Smart / HP App is in the list, remove or Disable

===================================

Restart Everything

Restart computer, printer, and the router that controls you network.

Can’t stand it?  Consider:  Restart computer(s) and printer.

===================================

Open and Check HP Smart / HP App

Stop if everything is now working.

===================================

Windows - Reset HP App / HP Smart Application

The Reset action removes the app data without uninstalling the application.

Settings > Apps > Installed Apps

Search / Find / Select HP Smart in the installed apps list

OR

Search / Find / select HP (app) in the installed apps list

Open Advanced options > Reset the app

Restart the computer and log in

Open HP Smart > Sign in > Add Printer(s)

OR

Open HP App > Sign in > Add your printer(s)

-- What if? --

If the app Reset does not work by itself,

then

Uninstall the HP Smart App and start over.

OR

Uninstall the HP App and start over.

Restart the computer and log in

“Get” a new copy of HP Smart / HP App:

 Microsoft Store or 123.hp.com - Printer setup from the HP® Official site

Open HP Smart / HP App > Sign in > Add Printer(s)

==============================

2)  Printer  connected to laptop via a USB printer between printer and computer

-- What if? --

If the printer is not connected to the network, that is, the printer is hardwired to the printer via a USB printer cable -- HP Smart / HP App are likely not the solution you seek.

Instead, Install the full driver printer software -- the full driver can tolerate a USB only connection.

3)  Discussion - Connection requirements / help

-- What? --

HP Smart and HP App (the recently / currently released replacement for HP Smart) are both suited to a network environment.

-- Dragon Comment --

I had read years ago that HP Smart could -- at that time -- survive in a USB to printer, no-network environment -- I've never seen it.  Likely not even true anymore. I've not used a USB connected printer since before HP Smart was a thing.  ?

"Network connected" means that, at the very least, if you do not have or cannot use a full router controlled network, that you connect the printer to the computer / laptop using Wi-Fi Direct.  The Wi-Fi Direct connection type is not ideal -- it is a huge step up from having the printer hardwired to the laptop using a USB printing cable.

  User Guide - HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 series

  Section Use Wi-Fi Direct - Starting on Page 139

and / or

 HP printer setup (Wi-Fi Direct)

-- Important --

Wi-Fi Direct cannot connect your printer to the Internet -- Some features in your apps and software will not work, for example -- anything needing certain Cloud services, remote printing, Instant Ink service.

Ideally, the printer should be connected to your network (router controlled), Ethernet or full Wireless, and assigned its own manual / static IP address on both router and printer.

Ethernet is generally a better option if you can use it.

Next, the printer should (must be) connected to the Internet via Web Services.

Example – EWS Setup – IPv4

EWS > HP Document / How-to (Basic format)

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section Open the EWS over a local network orientation

Classic EWS – Ink-Jet printers

Ethernet

Open your Browser >

Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Network > Wired (802.3) > IPv4 Configuration

Wireless

Open your Browser >

Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > IPv4 Configuration

As Available:

Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > Advanced

Section Advanced

Network Interface on / off, Network SSID name, Security Settings, Passphrase / Password

Select and connect to the correct SSID / network name for the bandwidth you are using.

Notes

  • It is not mandatory that you use a manual / static IP address.  Doing so can improve stability.
  • If you assign a manual / static address on the printer, update your router to reflect the assigned IP address.
  • EWS sections might be locked and require the printer’s PIN number to access.  Find the printer’s default PIN inside the ink cartridge ink cartridge / area, or perhaps on the bottom or back of the printer.  Check your printer’s User Guide first chapter for details – search the document for “ PIN “.
