Hi @Rosemud,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If HP Smart is not recognizing your HP Envy 6400 series printer and you're seeing an orange/yellow triangle with an exclamation mark, it indicates that there’s an issue with the printer connection or setup. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Check Printer and Connection

Ensure Printer is On:

  • Make sure your HP Envy 6400 is turned on and ready. Check the printer's control panel for any error messages or warning lights.

Check Connectivity:

  • Confirm that the printer is properly connected to the network (if using Wi-Fi) or to the PC (if using USB). For Wi-Fi, make sure the printer is connected to the same network as your PC.

2. Restart Devices

Restart Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, wait for about 30 seconds, and then turn it back on.

Restart PC:

  • Reboot your computer to refresh its network settings and connections.

3. Update HP Smart App

  • Check for Updates:
    • Ensure you have the latest version of the HP Smart app. Update the app through the app store on your device:
      • Windows: Go to the Microsoft Store, search for HP Smart, and update if needed.
      • macOS: Open the Mac App Store, find HP Smart, and update it.
      • Mobile Devices: Update through the Google Play Store (Android) or Apple App Store (iOS).

4. Check Printer Installation

  • Reinstall HP Smart:
    • Uninstall and then reinstall the HP Smart app to resolve any potential software issues.
      • Windows/macOS: Go to Control Panel or Applications, uninstall HP Smart, and then reinstall it from the HP Smart website or the appropriate app store.
      • Mobile Devices: Uninstall HP Smart from your device and reinstall it from the app store.

5. Add Printer Manually

  • Manually Add Printer:
    • Try adding the printer manually within the HP Smart app.
      • Open HP Smart and click Add Printer.
      • Follow the prompts to search for and select your HP Envy 6400.

6. Check Printer Software and Drivers

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Ensure you have the latest drivers for your HP Envy 6400 installed.
    • Windows: Go to Device Manager, find your printer under Printers, right-click it, and select Update driver.
    • macOS: Check for driver updates in System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.

Download Software from HP:

  • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest software for the HP Envy 6400 series.

7. Check Network Connection

  • If using Wi-Fi, make sure the printer is connected to your Wi-Fi network. You can print a network configuration page from the printer’s control panel to check its network settings.
  • If you’re using Wi-Fi Direct, ensure that the feature is enabled on both your printer and PC.

8. Perform Printer Reset

  • Perform a factory reset on your HP Envy 6400 to clear any potential configuration issues.
    • Navigate to Settings on the printer control panel, find Printer Maintenance, and select Restore Factory Defaults.

9. Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check for updates through the HP Smart app or on the HP Support website

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
