HP Smart works fine.  Scan to options on dashboard do not.

Welcome to the HP Community --

HP Smart -- on newer printers -- might add Shortcuts to the Printer Control Panel.

These are not "Scan to Computer".

If you are instead asking about the full driver printer software and the "Scan to Computer" feature available in that software, then the following might be helpful at least to understand how the feature should be working.

=============================

Printer Software - Windows

If not done,

Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Printer Software

Open Web Pack Installation - Web Page

Download, Save, and Install.

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

=========================

               Installed Software

Containers, Shortcuts on the Desktop

            What about HP Scan?

Once installed, the full driver printer software will have added one of two "container" shortcuts on the Desktop:

  • Printer Assistant - named for the printer model

OR

On newer printers and when the new full driver printer software no longer supports the Printer Assistant:

  • Scan Assistant - named for itself

Printer_Assistant_Scan_Assistant_Shortcut_Icons_on_Desktop_11Printer_Assistant_Scan_Assistant_Shortcut_Icons_on_Desktop_11

Next,

The full driver printer software, once installed, will have added a shortcut icon for HP Scan

The shortcut for HP Scan that is part of the full driver might be named for the printer model.

Separately --

For models that support the feature AND when installed --

Installation of the HP Universal Scan Software adds an "HP Scan" self-named shortcut icon to the Desktop.

====================================

Enable Scan to Computer

Open

User Guide

Starting on Page 33

Your printer supports the Printer Assistant --

Printer Assistant shortcut > Tab Scan > Manage Scan to Computer > Enable

Or

Newer printers where the Printer Assistant is no longer supported --

HP Scan Assistant shortcut > Manage Scan to Computer > Enable

General Example - Printer Assistant / Scan Assistant

Plus Additional shortcuts for Printer Apps and Software

Thank you.

So ignore HP Smart then?

You are welcome.

Use of HP Smart is indeed optional -- HP Smart is a clever and useful application in my opinion.

Not everyone is a fan.

HP Smart and the full driver printer software are different from each other --

Each provides features that are either unique to that app / software or are complimentary.

The full driver includes the Printer Assistant container that, in turn, includes "Manage Scan to Computer".

The full driver supports printing and scanning from other software.

For example,

  • The full driver includes HP Scan - a full service scan software that supports the concept of Custom Shortcuts.
  • The full driver supports printing from within Word (and Word-like document editors).

HP Smart includes Print, Scan, Save, Share (to Email), and access to Mobile Fax.

  • HP Smart includes "Shortcuts" that support (where / as available) Print, Save (to Cloud), and Email.
  • HP Smart does not (at this writing) include a method to enable "Manage Scan to Computer".

Went back to HP smart because

A) document feeder didn't work automatically from scan to computer have to tell program!

B) I still have to click a button on the windows scan and fax so pointless program.

I was looking to scan to computer and it would just work.
