Hi @canddski
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're having trouble getting HP Smart to detect your HP DeskJet F4272 printer, even though it's showing up in Printers and Devices. This issue could be related to the app not properly communicating with the printer, or there may be a configuration problem.
Let’s go through some steps to help you get HP Smart to detect your printer and resolve any connectivity issues.
Step 1: Check Your Printer Connection
Make sure your HP DeskJet F4272 is properly connected to your computer or Wi-Fi network:
- USB Connection:
- If you're using a USB connection, check that the USB cable is securely plugged into both the printer and the laptop.
- Try using a different USB port on your computer, and make sure the USB cable is not damaged.
- Wi-Fi Connection:
- If you're using Wi-Fi, verify that the printer is properly connected to your Wi-Fi network.
- You can check this on your printer’s display panel by navigating to Settings > Network to confirm the Wi-Fi connection.
Step 2: Restart Your Devices
Sometimes, simply restarting your devices can clear up temporary glitches:
- Turn off the printer, wait for about 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Restart your computer.
- Restart HP Smart by closing and reopening the app.
Step 3: Update HP Smart and Printer Drivers
Ensure that both HP Smart and your printer drivers are up to date:
- Update HP Smart:
- Go to the Microsoft Store (or the Mac App Store, if you're on a Mac).
- Search for HP Smart and make sure it's up to date.
- Update Printer Drivers:
- Go to Device Manager (type Device Manager in the Windows search bar).
- Expand the Printers section, right-click on your HP DeskJet F4272, and select Update driver.
- You can also visit the HP Support website to download the latest drivers for your printer: HP DeskJet F4272 Drivers.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel, and thank you for your prompt reply. I have carried out all your recomendations, but unfortunately the problem persists. The F4272 is so old that it has been retired from HP support so when I reloaded the drivers, I had to use a generic 4200 driver, which may be why HP Smart could not detect it. I have decided to order a replacement 6020 from HP UK to go with my HP Pavilion laptop.
