HP ENVY Pro 6455 All-in-One Printer

HP Smart needs to access my location to find my printer, but when I open the app settings, location cannot be turned on. It is greyed out. What can I do?

@PerrineD, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're having trouble enabling Location Services in the HP Smart app, which is preventing your HP ENVY Pro 6455 from being discovered. Let's get this sorted out.

Why Location Access Is Needed

HP Smart uses Bluetooth and Location Services to detect nearby printers, especially during the initial setup. If the location toggle is greyed out, it’s usually due to device-level settings or permissions.

Steps to Resolve the Issue

For Android Devices:

  1. Go to your phone’s Settings > Apps > HP Smart.
  2. Tap Permissions.
  3. Tap Location and select “Allow only while using the app”.
  4. If the toggle is still greyed out:
    • Go to Settings > Location.
    • Ensure Location Services are turned ON globally.
    • Check if App permissions are restricted by parental controls or device management apps.

For iOS Devices:

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
  2. Make sure Location Services is turned ON.
  3. Scroll down and tap HP Smart.
  4. Set it to “While Using the App” or “Always”.
  5. If greyed out, check Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Location Services and ensure changes are allowed.

For Windows 10/11:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location.
  2. Make sure Location for this device is turned ON.
  3. Scroll down to Choose apps that can use your location and enable HP Smart.
  4. If greyed out, check if you're using a work or school account with restrictions.

Additional Tips

  • Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your device.
  • Restart your device and the printer.
  • Make sure you're using the latest version of the HP Smart app: HP Smart

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
