On Windows 10, my HP printer showed "There's an app associated with this printer." I recently got s new PC with Windows 11. It can see the printer, but it no longer says "There's an ap ..." : How do I associate  the app (HP Smart) with the printer?

Hi @MLW52,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

I see that you are facing an issue with installing HP smart app on your Windows 11 device.

A) Please follow the steps below to perform a power drain.

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

B) Uninstall the printer software by following the steps from this link and restart the devices.

D)  Install the printer software by clicking on the link again and let me know if that resolves the issue.

Note: Enable Bluetooth for an HP Smart app setup: Enable Bluetooth on your computer or mobile device so that HP Smart can detect the printer during the setup.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

My printer, an HP Officejet 6500A Plus, is out of warrantee, so I am loathe to uninstall it for fear of not being able to get it back. That may be why I  am unable to add it. HP Smart is installed, and the printer (connected by Ethernet cable) can be seen by the system (HP Smart shows it as online). When I try to add it, something flashes to fast to be read. There's upside down yellow triangle with an exclamation point by the printer name.

Hi Irwin6!

Alas, I have NOT tried to uninstall/reinstall my printer, because I received a message earlier when trying to add it to HP Smart that it failed because the  printer is out of warrantee. I can't afford to uninstall  it, then not be able to reinstall it for the same reason. I don't know if you can guarantee that I  will be able to do so. I hope you understand.

Would rather leave as-is than risk losing ability to access the printer at all.

Very best regards,

Mark

The printer is direct-connected by Ethernet cable. Note that HP Smart can see it. It's so old I doubt it even supports Bluetooth.

When I click on it, I get

MLW52_1-1722141006395.png

When I click on "Add New Printer", the

MLW52_2-1722141177525.png

disappears for a fraction of a second, except for one time, when I could see something to the effect of "out of warranty". It's so old that when I enter the serial number into the the product page for the serial number, it returns "Serial number incorrect...". There's no mention of "Bluetooth" in the Product Specifications.

For now, I've simply added HP Smart to my task bar. That's working fine. I have no intention of trying to uninstall/install the printer, as with the "Out of warrantee" status, and inability to even recognize the serial number, there's no guarantee that I would be able to install.
