If I set up a printer using HP Smart on Windows, can I then print/scan with that printer using a Linux computer with HPLIP? We have Windows and Linux computers in our house and use both on our present printer for printing and scanning. We may go to a newer HP printer but only if we can print/scan using any operating system. The printing from smart feature would be nice but not if it means not being able to use a Linux computer to get smart phone printing.

1)  Yes, you can install Windows printer software on a Windows computer and install Linux printer software on a Linux computer.

The operation of the printer -- and the printer software installed on a particular Operating System -- does not cross over between the two Operating Systems.  What?   There is no relationship between the two different Operating Systems.

Both system types, that is, the machine(s) running Windows and the machine(s) running Linux must be on the same network.

2) The applications and support for Mobile Printing are not related to Windows or Linux printing software or applications.

Not all printers support all Mobile Printing options.

Assuming that the printer is HPLIP, would having set up the printer for Smart HP using a Windows computer then prevent a Linux computer from printing/scanning with the same printer?

HP Smart - or any printer software installed in Windows -- does not prevent using the printer of any printer software installed on a Linux system.

Beyond the requirement that the devices all be on the same network,  there is no relationship between printer software installed on a machine running Windows and printer software installed on a machine running Linux.
