Hi @MisterMike1936

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like the printer icon for your HP Smart Tank 5000/5100 is not staying on your desktop, and you’re having to go through the setup process repeatedly.

Let’s resolve this by pinning the application permanently to your desktop or Start menu:

Steps to Keep the Icon on Your Home Screen:

Locate the HP Smart App:

  • Open the Start menu and type "HP Smart" in the search bar.
  • When the app appears in the search results, right-click on it.

Pin the App to the Start Menu or Taskbar:

  • After right-clicking on the app, select Pin to Start to ensure it always appears in your Start menu.
  • Alternatively, select Pin to Taskbar to keep it visible at the bottom of your screen.

Create a Desktop Shortcut:

  • Navigate to the app's installation folder:
    • Open File Explorer and go to C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86).
    • Look for the HP folder, then locate the executable file for the HP Smart app (e.g., HPSmart.exe).
  • Right-click on the executable file and choose Send to > Desktop (create shortcut). This will permanently place a shortcut on your desktop.

Set the App to Open on Startup (Optional):

  • If you’d like HP Smart to launch automatically whenever you log in:
    • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
    • Type shell:startup and press Enter. This opens the Startup folder.
    • Drag the desktop shortcut for the HP Smart app into this folder.

Update the HP Smart App:

  • Ensure you’re using the latest version of the app to prevent recurring setup issues. Visit the Microsoft Store and check for updates.
