HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw

I have a HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw that I've been using for over a year.  Today for some reason Windows thought it was offline when it was not and I could not get Windows to think it was online.  I decided to remove the printer and add it again.  I've done this before with other printers to solve problems.

When I tried to add the printer I can't get it to install correctly.  When I try to install it using Windows I don't get the correct drivers.  When I try to install it using HP Smart the printer shows up as online, but when I select it, the app then says it's offline and won't add it.

I've tried multiple things listed on the forums, but they have not worked.   That last thing I did was to follow instructions shown in another post to remove all printers, drivers, and HP apps from my computer and started from scratch, but that did not fix it.  I've attached screen shots showing the HP Smart app showing the printer online before I select it and saying it's offline after I select it.

A probably related issue is that I was able to print from my iPhone before today, but now I can't.  I can see the printer and select it, but when I try to print to it I just get the "contacting printer" message that never completes.

I tried resetting the printer back to defaults, but that did not help.  Also, I checked for updates on the printer and there are no updates to install.

There have been no changes to my WiFi network today and the printer is connecting to the network fine.

Does anyone know what I can do to get the printer added to Windows and be able to print again from iOS?

Thanks.

Andy

Update:  I downloaded and installed the "full webpack" installer from the printer's product driver page.  It took a couple tries, but I was able to install the printer.  It shows up as expected with duplex and color options so it knows what printer it is and I was able to print.  But, the printer does not show up in HP Smart,  I still can't print from iOS, and I can't scan so something is still wrong.  I tried adding the printer again in HP Smart, but the same thing happens as before.  It shows as online, but when I select it, I'm told it's offline.

Update for 12/28/22: Today Windows thinks the printer is offline again and I can't print to it.   I really need to get this printer working again.  Is anyone from HP reading this.  I see replies to other messages.  Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

I tried using the "HP Print and Scan Doctor".  The printer shows up, but when I continue I get an error saying it can't communicate with the printer.  See screen shot.  I tried connecting to the printer with a web browser as suggested in another post, but the connection timed out.

The printer and my computer are connected to the same WiFi network and there has not been any change to that network since the printer was working.

Thanks

Andy

I have a very similar issue on my Windows 11 Pro. My printer HP8620 (wired connected) stopped working out of the blue 2 month ago. I have several clients in my Home Network. The other clients and mobile devices still can print even with the printer not being in the same subnet which never was an issue. But from my main Workstation it stopped. I even put the printer back to same subnet as my main machine. All other clients still can print. Mine dont. I deinstalled all HP SW as described in some threads. I removed all installed printers in windows printermanagement. I checked file integrity for the Windows Installation. I downloaded the newest drivers and help tools from HP. Be it HP Smart, the full driver installer, the Dr-bla-bla-i-am-the-best-and-will-for-sure-not-fix-your-installation Help Tool from HP. Nothing helped - the printer is always found on IP. Then it tries to install the drivers and fails - there are different flavors of failing. HP Smart shows everything from the Printer and can even do the test print (!!). But it says not installed. If you say install - it tries, fails and tells you to try to add in Windows Devices. There you can do that and it seems to install it. It shows ready but later its gone again - it also does not show in devices as printer. If you try to use the Full installer it as well finds the printer and then tries to install it for about 2 minutesand then it says "Unsuccessfull Network Installation - the printer was unable to be installed over the network" - what can be so hard to install the driver?? That part of the communication bubbles within the wizard still talks about WIndows 8 speaks for itself - of course i used the newest available driver from HP.

I am really annoyed. If you search the web you find this behavior in Microsoft or HP forum but no really a solution. Just "inteligent wizards and agents" telling you the obvious and not helping at all.

If someone from HP is reading this i am open for a helpdesk session. Not sure what the issue is since i read similar behavior happens with other printer vendors therefore it might be a MS problem? nevertheless i would expect a vendor like HP should have a solution or a good guide how to start complete from scratch including printer registry cleaning or whatever necessary without the need to reinstall your win11.

I'm sorry you are having the same problem.  I fiddled with it a bunch more last night and it magically started working again.  I was able to add the printer using HP Smart and it appears to be working normally.  At least for now.  One thing I did do differently was that I tried to use the "HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software" that I downloaded from my printer's support page.  That program did not work, but after restarting the computer and printer again.  I was able to access the printers IP address and HP Smart started working again.  I have no idea if that "fixed" it or if it was a coincidence, but that's something different to try.

My printer is still having problems.  I thought it was working, but after getting it to work on day, the next time I try to print it won't work.  Once when it happened starting the printer and computer got it working again, but today that is not fixing it.  I tried running the print and scan doctor and it can see the printer, but it can't connect to it.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Hi @a_j_kurtz,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing a connectivity issue with your HP Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

To assist you better:

  • Is the blue Wi-Fi light solid on the printer? ( if the Wi-Fi Light is blinking then please re-connect the printer back to your Wi-Fi router - Restore Wi-Fi setup mode on your HP printer, Once you restore the network to defaults, then please follow the instructions on this link to connect the printer back to your PC.)
  • How far is the printer located from the WiFi router?
  • Do you have a dual-band router?
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both networks.

While you respond to that, Let's perform a power drain:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle

Update the printer firmware

  • Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your product
  • Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

If the issue persists, then please follow the below steps to resolve the issue.

  • Touch on the wifi icon ((i)) on the printer, and take down the IP address
  • Click Start/Devices and Printers.  Right-click on your HP Printer.  Select Printer Properties.  Select the Ports tab at the top.
  • Select Add Port.  Select Standard TCP/IP Port.  Select New Port.
  • Follow the Add Port Wizard.  Under Printer Name or IP Address. Example:  192.168.1.15.  The IP address will be copied under Port Name.
  • Select Next and Finish the Wizard.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

@Anand_Andy

Most of what you posted is not relevant and the rest I've already tried.  Boiler plate instructions that have already been posted multiple other places on the forums is not useful.  A response specific to this issue would be helpful.  I've given up on trying to get the printer/scanner working through WiFi and have set it up on USB.  If you have any suggestions relevant to my issue then please post them and I will try WiFi again.  It's annoying that AirPrint is not working any more also.  iOS can see the printer, but when I try to print nothing ever prints.  Running HP Smart on my iPhone also finds the printer, but printing from HP Smart on iOS also does not work.
