Having lost the use of HP Solution Center I have downloaded HP Support Assistant but that refuses to recognise my F2180. How can I scan now?

Hello @Ronnie52,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Try this Solution:
Install HP Scan Extended find here: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/
Download this file: HPScanExt.msi
Close all programs
Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo > in folder Downloads double-click on the msi.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
Andreas

Many thanks, Andreas. I did as you suggested and it was very promising; I could get the scanner make the expected noises. Unfortunately, although I had set up the target folder for my scans-to-file, at the end of the scan there was an instantaneous flash of something on the preview panel and the save button remained disabled and no Save As dialog appeared. I tried the email option and the same thing occurred.
Any ideas?

Hi Ronnie,
did you change any settings after installing HP Scan Extended?
What antivirus software is used?
Regards
Andreas

I am using Windows 8.1 with Defender. I don't recollect changing any PC settings outside HP Scan Extended; I did have a play with the settings inside, though. However, I did reset them according to your previous message with no joy.
I have just uninstalled and re-installed the app but it still behaves as before.
I do have MS Scan installed, which, though pretty basic, works.
Once again I greatly appreciated your help.
