Laserjet Pro M251nw
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have the latest drivers and applications installed via HP support.  The Status and Alerts does not always launch when my computer is booted.  I sometimes get an Administrator message asking if I want to allow the program to make changes on my computer and other times it does not show up at all (and the software doesn't start either).  It does not matter if the printer is turned on or not at boot.  When the software does manage to start, I get the status and alerts while printing but with mixed results.  Sometimes I get bar graphs for toner levels and sometimes I get a message telling me what the toner levels are.  I have not tried using the software on my laptop which has Windows 10 Pro installed.  Right now I'm keeping this restricted to my Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) desktop.

@scrapser

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand, you're in need of support,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

When was the last time it worked fine?

Were there any hardware/software changes made?

Here a few steps we could try to resolve the issue:

Root level uninstall and reinstall printer drivers:

  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP LaserJet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

To reinstall, click here (Select your operating system and download full feature printer drivers)

Let me know how this goes,

Cheers!

Hello,

I do not use the printer often enough to remember when it worked fine in the past.  All I know is what it is doing now.  The driver and Firmware are current versions.  I have taken steps to try and eliminate variables and get a handle on how the software behaves in a predictable manner.  Here is what I have found over the past week....

The Status and Alerts software is now showing the Administrator pop-up message asking if I want it to let it make changes to my computer.  It shows up regardless of whether the printer is powered on or not.  The message pops up every time I boot the computer so obviously there is a setting not being saved in the Registry that would remember my preference.

The Status and Alerts is recognizinging my printer and giving me updates on toner levels and so forth so there is no problem there.  At this point I think I just need to find out what is needed to get the Administrator message from appearing.

As a reminder I want to repeat this is my desktop computer with Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) installed.

Thanks

It looks like you were interacting with @Flower_Bud, but he is out for the day. I'm KrazyToad & I'm at your service.

I suggest we disable the User Access Control

Open User Account Control Settings by clicking the Start button and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type uac, and then click Change User Account Control settings.

To turn off UAC, move the slider to the Never notify position, and then click OK.

if you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. You will need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off.

Keep me posted how it goes

Thank you and have a great day 😊
