Hi @t_o1.

I'd like to help!

I understand HP Smart app launches then quis.

Try the below suggestions -

  1. Uninstall HP Smart
  2. Try updating mac/ios and printer firmware
  3. Install HP Smart from the APP store

1.     If installed from HP.com please delete from /Users/Username/Library/Application Support/HP Smart. Then delete HP Smart from the Applications folder and reinstall from the Mac App Store.

2.    If downloaded from the Mac App Store please remove /Users/Username/Library/Containers/HP Smart/containers.plist and then launch HP Smart from the Applications folder and go through the setup again.

Try updating mac and printer firmware

To update the printer's firmware, refer - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
To update Mac, try these steps - How to update the software on your Mac

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Sorry for delay - work has been really busy.

Tried your suggestions to update printer driver:

1-Uninstall HP Smart:  i could not find the file paths indicated in 1 and 2 on my mac in order to uninstall HP Smart. So i did a finder search and deleted everything related to HP Smart.  (I have screen prints of what was deleted.) Then downloaded from hp123.com-which links to Apple Store- and installed.  Same thing is happening - launch HP Smart, get window with spinning circle, then app closes.

2-Update Mac ios and printer firmware:

My mac is running Catalina and is up to date (10.15.7) - HP Smart should run on this OS.

I followed your link to update printer firmware, selected option to Download printer firmware from HP website (Mac).  Identified product (HP Officejet 9025 AIO); only option is to install HP Smart (https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-9020-all-in-one-printer-series/239... ).  I would guess that there is no firmware update for this printer so i cannot take this step.  HP Smart is still not running.

3-Install HP Smart from App Store:  the link from the HP website goes to the Apple App store so i have done this.

At the same time this was going on, i ran out of ink. (Not using HP instant ink). Replaced ink and i can now print and copy but still cannot use scan features without HP Smart.  Printer tells me to perform setup.  Printer and computer are connected to same network. HP Smart worked when i first got printer and set it up on my network.

Anything else i can try?  (I have also restarted mac a couple times.)

Thanks!

Could you check if there is an update option for HP Smart on the app store?

If the issue persists, let's try and add the airprint printer-

Add the Air Print printer to the Mac printer queue

Confirm you are using Air Print by adding the printer in System Preferences.

  1. Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
  2. Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, and then do one of the following steps.
    • If your printer is listed, remove and re-add the printer to confirm it is set up for Air Print. Click the printer name, click the minus sign "-" to delete the printer, click the plus sign "+"click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name and then continue to the next step.
    • If your printer is not listed, click the plus sign, click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, and then continue to the next step.
  3. Confirm Air Print or Secure Air Print displays in the Use or Print Using menu, and then click Add.
  4. Open a document or photo, click File, and then click Print.

Scan images in Image Capture on Mac

After connecting a scanner to your Mac, use Image Capture to scan images. If your scanner has an automatic document feeder, you can scan several pages at once. If you have a flatbed scanner, you can scan multiple images, straighten any that were placed crookedly on the scan bed, and save each image to its own file.

  1. Connect your scanner to your computer, then turn on your scanner.

  2. In the Image Capture app  on your Mac, select your scanner in the Devices or Shared list.

If you don’t see your scanner in the list, see Set up a scanner.

  3. Scan your images.

If you have a scanner with an automatic document feeder or flatbed scanner, see Scan images or documents.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
