I am using the HP assist, not interested in Smart app at all. I suddenly can't scan using the HP assist app. I can print when a document is open, but can't scan.

Hi @Gjbevil,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for contacting us regarding your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer.
We understand you prefer using HP Scan via HP Support Assistant and are currently unable to scan, even though printing still works correctly. We appreciate that you're not using the HP Smart app and will focus on troubleshooting within your preferred setup.
1. Restart the Printer and PC
- Turn off the printer and unplug it for 60 seconds.
- Restart your computer.
- Turn the printer back on and wait until it is fully ready.
- Try scanning again via HP Support Assistant.
2. Reinstall the Full Feature Software
The HP Scan tool may have become corrupted. Reinstalling the full driver package can restore full scanning functionality:
- Go to the: HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer series Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support
- Download and install the Full Feature Software and Drivers for your printer.
- Follow the prompts to complete the installation and select “HP Scan” during the setup.
3. Check Windows Services
The Windows WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) service must be running for scanning to work:
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) in the list.
- Make sure the status is Running and the startup type is Automatic.
- If not, right-click > Properties > Start the service, and set the startup type to Automatic.
4. Try scanning via Windows Fax and Scan (as a test)
- Press Start, search for Windows Fax and Scan.
- Try scanning from there to isolate whether the issue is software-specific.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
