So I purchased the 9015 Office Jet Pro some years ago.  I have never ensured the ink cartridges were always genuine HP products.  Its my personal computer printer and I should be allowed to use whatever print cartridges I want.  In this forum people have stated that the printer came from the factory with, "dynamic security protection" that prevents the use of non-HP cartridges... even so... they can update the firmware anytime they wish and change the rules for using their products.  I think this is absurd and I will never buy PH again.  They suck!

Hi @SGNitz,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear your frustration, and you’re not alone in feeling this way. Here’s what’s happening:

HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 printers (and many other HP models) include Dynamic Security, which is designed to work only with HP genuine cartridges that have HP chips or circuitry. This feature is part of the printer firmware and can be updated automatically when firmware updates are installed. If a non-HP cartridge is detected, the printer may display errors or stop printing.

What You Can Do

  1. Check Cartridge Compatibility
    • Use HP Instant Ink or genuine HP cartridges for guaranteed compatibility.
    • If you prefer third-party cartridges, avoid installing firmware updates that enable stricter security.

  2. Disable Automatic Firmware Updates
    • On the printer control panel:
Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer > Printer Update Options > Off
    • In the HP app:
Settings > Advanced Settings > Printer Update > Off

  3. Rollback Firmware (If Possible)
    • Some models allow reverting to an earlier firmware version, but this is limited and not always supported.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I am aware of the dynamic security feature (activated for non-HP chip cartridges AFTER my purchase of this printer and your instructions are well known across several self-help sites on the internet... unfortunately HP has deleted ANY opportunity to use this feature (at least on my printer) which says specifically that I cannot change this setting.  nor is their an option on my printer to roll back firmware.  HP does this only to ensure people buy their products and not others.  Its a complete rip!  This is my personal computer and HP doesn't own it after I purchase it!  Keep your hands off.  Secondly, AFTER I bought and installed the original HP cartridges (yes you won HP)... the printer now will not connect to my computer.  The printer says the connection to my wireless home network was successful while at the same time telling me that I have a, "Connection Problem... The printer was unable to connect to the server... please try again later."  What server? and how much later?  I have spent all morning troubleshooting and trying to print a document (to no avail) after 3 days trying to work around the HP cartridge issue (to no avail).  bottom line is that HP products should be way easier and much more friendly to use.  My experience just in the last 3 months has been horrible and I will NEVER buy another HP product.

Hi @SGNitz,

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. I completely understand your frustration, and I’m truly sorry for the inconvenience you’ve experienced with your OfficeJet Pro 9015.

To clarify a few important points:

  • Dynamic Security: This feature is designed to ensure optimal performance and printer reliability by verifying the use of original HP cartridges. However, I understand that this can be restrictive, and you are correct that in newer firmware versions, the option to disable Dynamic Security is no longer available. Firmware rollback is also blocked on certain models once newer versions are installed.

  • Server Connection Message: The “unable to connect to the server” message typically refers to the printer’s attempt to reach HP’s web services (such as Instant Ink or HP Smart Cloud), not your local Wi-Fi.
Let’s try these steps to help restore normal operation:
    1. On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults, then reconnect to your Wi-Fi.
    2. Once reconnected, check your network’s firewall or router settings to ensure ports 80 and 443 are open (these are used for HP web services).
    3. If you’re not using HP Smart or Instant Ink, you can turn off Web Services on the printer. This will stop the “server connection” messages and allow local network printing only.
    4. Try adding the printer again using HP Smart or by manually installing it via Devices and Printers in Windows using its IP address.

While I understand your concerns about control and transparency, please know HP’s goal is to maintain print quality, security, and hardware reliability, not to restrict use. That said, your feedback is important, and I’ll make sure it’s shared with the appropriate team internally.

Take care and have a good day.

I have no idea what your role is here.  Does HP pay you to reply to these messages?  If they do HP is worse than I thought.  If they don't I appreciate your good intentions but your advice keeps taking me further down a rabbit hole.  When I first bought this printer it was easy (almost a non-event) to take it out of the box, follow the prompts, and print your stuff... Now HP's updates, dynamic security and other **bleep** they keep updating my printer with makes it a completely different printer/printer interface (with my home network and my devices in my home).  So no... your solution didn't help.  I know for a fact that my printer is not connected to my home wifi network and I can't get it back.  Your solutions use different nomenclature than my printer but even when I figure out the corollaries it doesn't fix the problem.  I takes me further from fixing the real issue (or so it seems). Why doesn't the Printer scan for available networks - like my phone, ipad or computer - and offer me the option to just join that network.  Every other device in my home works that way.  Even my coffee pot.  **bleep** HP!
