HP M404dw Printer - Cartridge issues

An authorized service center said that if I had allowed installation of HP Smart, and also recently allowed a software update, that a perfectly good but not original toner cartridge would now no longer work, and they were right.

I can't keep HP printers any more because their updates are not to my benefit at all, more predatory really.

My only question is how can any company of any size, and thinking rationally, believe that it can treat its current customers this way and prosper long term? Short term, probably.

Even if it costs me a bundle, I am switching brands today, forever. Please don't pass on any HP propaganda that they do this all for me.
