I installed HP Easy Scan onto a new iMac. Printer connected by USB. When adding the printer in system preferences, it did not incude printer software specific to the pro 8600 in the provided list, so I defaulted to the generic software.  When attempting to switch to the HP driver thru the company website, the message was that it could not configure the device software.  I can print with the current set up, but I cannot scan or fax.  Selecting Browse Scanners in the HP Easy Scan application resulted in no listed devices.  My old iMac has the same operating system and when it was connected to the same printer through USB, it worked perfectly.  Any help appreciated.  Thanks much.

A warm welcome to HP forums! This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.

It looks like you don't have a compatible printer driver installed on your Mac. Let's try these step's:

1.) Download and install HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for OS X from here.

2.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

3.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign  to delete the printer.

4.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button  at the bottom of the list.

5.) Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.

6.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select the name of your printer in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.

7.) Try to print and scan.

Let me know how it goes!

Thank you so much!  My problem was attempting to download the drivers from the HP site.  I'm not a novice at this and have used the drivers from the HP site before so was totally perplexed. I had no idea the drivers were available on an Apple site (nor apparently was the support tech from Apple Care who I spoke to yesterday at length).  I am up and scanning again!
