Hi @CA117

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! Not to worry I'll do everything I can to help get this sorted for you. 😊

I'd like to help you with your Instant Ink issue.

If your HP Envy 4500 displays “update in progress” every time you print and fails to connect to Instant Ink, the printer may be stuck in a firmware update loop or unable to reach HP’s servers due to a network fault.

Let’s walk through a few steps to restore connectivity and clear the update message.

Step-by-Step Fix for “Update in Progress” and Instant Ink Connectivity

1. Power Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from the rear and the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn the printer on.

This clears temporary firmware and network faults.

2. Restore Network Settings

  • On the printer’s control panel:
    • Tap Setup > Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults
  • Then tap Wireless Setup Wizard
  • Reconnect to your Wi-Fi network and ensure the wireless light is solid (not blinking)

3. Check Internet Access

  • Print a Wireless Network Test Report:
    • Tap Setup > Network Settings > Print Wireless Test Report
  • Confirm that the printer is connected to Wi-Fi and has internet access

4. Update Firmware Manually

  • Visit: HP Envy 4500 Drivers and Firmware
  • Download and install the latest firmware update utility
  • Run it from your Windows PC while the printer is connected via USB or Wi-Fi

This bypasses the stuck update loop and ensures the printer has the latest software.

5. Re-enable Web Services

  • On the printer’s control panel:
    • Tap Setup > Web Services Setup
    • If Web Services are off, tap Enable
    • If already enabled, tap Remove Web Services, then re-enable

This refreshes the Instant Ink connection and clears outdated service links

6. Print a Test Page

  • Open the HP App on your PC or mobile device
  • Select your printer > Print > Print a Test Page
  • Confirm that the printer responds without showing “update in progress”

Let me know what you observe after these steps—I’ll guide you further if needed. You’re doing everything right by staying attentive and proactive. With a few resets and updates, your printer should return to smooth, responsive performance.
