Hi
My HP f4480 stopped printing a few weeks ago.
I am using a Mac Sonoma 14.6.1.
The printer icon looks like it is going to open (bounces on my doc and then just closes)
What is happening?
Does anyone know if I Can I fix this?

Hi @krystenklueh,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP F4480 printer is having trouble communicating with your Mac. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:
1. Restart Everything
- Power off your printer and unplug it from the wall.
- Restart your Mac.
- After the Mac has rebooted, plug the printer back in and turn it on.
2. Check Connections
- Ensure that the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and the Mac. If you're using a wireless connection, ensure the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Mac.
3. Update Printer Drivers
- Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for your HP F4480 compatible with macOS Sonoma. Install any updates available.
4. Reset Printing System
- On your Mac, go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and select Reset printing system. This will remove all printers and queues, so you’ll need to re-add your printer afterward.
5. Re-add the Printer
- After resetting, click the + button to add your HP F4480 printer again. Make sure it appears and is selected as the default printer.
6. Run Printer Troubleshooter
- If available, run the HP Smart app for diagnostics and troubleshooting. You can download it from the Mac App Store.
7. Check for macOS Updates
- Make sure your macOS is up to date. Go to System Settings > Software Update and install any updates available.
8. Try Different Software
- Sometimes, certain applications can have issues. Try printing from a different application (like Preview or TextEdit) to see if the problem persists.
9. Check for Error Messages
- If the printer is showing any error lights or messages, check the printer's manual or HP's website for guidance on those specific errors.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
