HP firmware Updater.app cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified.

Q: How to I get this HP Updater app installed and

     Do I even need this firmware update from December 2021 ?

I have a new iMac M1 computer running Mac OS 12.1 Monterey.

I have a  Color Laserjet MFP M477fdw  setup, registered and installed in 2016.

After installing HP SMART and connecting my printer, I went on to check for current drives and firmware.

I went to the HP printer drivers support web site and found a firmware dated Dec 9, 2021.

So, I downloaded the firmware and attempted to install it.

After 3 tries, I finally got an error message:

HP firmware Updater.app cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified

At the printer control pad.

I followed the manual instructions to check the printer firmware. 

I made sure it had an Ethernet connected cable, and then I attempted to check the firmware: 

SETUP > SERVICE (password) > Laserjet Updates > Firmware Datecode         20201022

SETUP > SERVICE (password) > Laserjet Updates > Check for Updates Now

•    Checking for updates .....
•    No updates found (with a big green circle with check mark in the middle)

So, my question is, how to I get this HP Updater app installed and do I even need this firmware update from December 2021 ?

Be very wary of any firmware update from HP.

They recently updated my firmware and bricked my printer.
