HP, please fix your HP App.

When you spend a good sum of money on a printer you expect it to deliver the same quality as the printer before it you once owned, but instead you get a company that wants to take capabilities and standard features away but make you pay the same or more…

[MAIN ISSUE]
Please restore the print view options to the New HP app from the old one. Everyone who buys an HP printer should have these basic and core functions. (Fit to Page, Scale image to %, Orientation, borderless printing, double sided toggle, pages range, layout, and saved presets!)

[SIDE ISSUE]
This printer is is not compatible with iOS 18 so when you are in safari and choose share and print with HP app the printer freaks out and has a sort of seizure going in a infinite loop of mechanical noises that seem to get worse and worse is cycle without printing anything so your forced to cancel…save the doc to your device and print from the HP app directly. way to much work we didnt have to do before.

Hi @LOVEFIRE,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for the candid, detailed feedback. We hear you.

As HP, our goal with the new HP app is to simplify setup and make mobile printing more reliable across iOS and Android. That said, some advanced print controls you relied on (e.g., Fit to Page, % scale, orientation, duplex toggle, page range, layout presets, borderless) are either harder to find or, in some workflows, currently unavailable. Community threads and recent posts echo what you’re experiencing, especially around Fit to Page/Scale on iOS and the transition from the older HP Smart UI to the new HP app. We’re actively addressing this gap.

Below is a two-part response: (A) What HP is doing and (B) What you can do today to restore the controls and fix the iOS 18/Safari share-sheet issue.

A) What HP is doing

  1. Restoring/Surfacing core print options in the HP app
We are working to (re-)surface layout and scaling controls in a consistent location for iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS. Internal guidance and community posts show users looking for Fit to Page/Fill Page/Scale/Borderless in the new app; our teams are updating the UI and in-app help so these are easier to find and work the same across platforms.
  2. Improving iOS 18 compatibility and AirPrint integration
Multiple users reported that after iOS 18 updates, AirPrint fails from Apple apps (Safari/Notes/Pages), while printing still works from the HP app. We are testing changes to our app and firmware to better align with iOS 18’s AirPrint behavior and Bonjour/mDNS discovery. In the meantime, HP Support guidance recommends firmware updates and network/Bonjour checks, which often restore AirPrint discovery and print flow.
  3. Known limitation: Apple document formats via Share > HP app
A recent community report notes the new HP app may not open/print certain Apple-native formats directly (Pages), requiring a PDF conversion as a workaround. We’ve forwarded this scenario to engineering; a fix is planned in upcoming releases.

We appreciate you calling these out. Your suggestions directly help us prioritize the roadmap.

B) What you can do today (workarounds & quick fixes)

1) Get scaling, fit-to-page, orientation, duplex, and borderless back

  • Print from HP app’s “Print Photos” or “Print Documents” tiles and open Preview > More settings. Depending on file type and printer capability, you’ll see Resize / Fit to Page / Fill Page / Borderless / Duplex. (On mobile, some options appear contextually after you set Paper Size/Type.) If Borderless is missing, confirm your printer supports borderless for the selected size/type.
  • If an option is still missing in the HP app:
    • Use Apple’s Photos/Files + AirPrint (often defaults to Fit for photos), or
    • Convert to PDF, then print via the HP app (PDF exposes more layout controls). Community guidance shows this helps when “Fit to Page” isn’t visible.

Desktop route for full control: If you need % scale, page ranges, duplex toggles, and saved presets consistently, print from a Windows/macOS device using the full HP driver/app, which provides complete settings (Paper/Quality, Features, Advanced). See HP’s print settings guide.

Rest of the steps will be shared in the next post

Please follow the rest of the steps as shown below.

2) Fix iOS 18 printing that fails from Safari/Apple apps (but works in the HP app)

If the printer “loops” mechanically or stalls from the Safari Share > Print flow:

  • Update everything
  • Restart order: Router → wait 90 seconds → Printer (wake and ready) → iPhone. This often restores AirPrint discovery (Bonjour/mDNS).
  • Same SSID & band: Ensure the iPhone and printer are on the same Wi‑Fi SSID, ideally the same band. Guest/isolated SSIDs can block AirPrint.
  • AirPrint setup basics: Confirm Wi‑Fi is ON, printer connected, and AirPrint reachable. HP’s AirPrint setup guide steps through network connection, WPS/Wizard, and status LEDs.
  • If Apple-native docs won’t print (e.g., Pages via Share):
    • Open the document in Pages > Share > Export as PDF, then print via the HP app; or
    • Use the HP app’s Print Documents and pick the PDF copy. This is our current best workaround while we roll out an app-side fix.

 I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
