I would like to use 11x17 paper in both trays in my 7740. Is it possible for the printer to switch between the trays automatically? I have printer set to select tray automatically and both trays set to 11x17. But it only prints from tray 1 and when tray 1 runs out of paper it does not then select tray 2 and just says out of paper. If I have to manually select tray 2 i might as well just fill tray 1 up with paper which cuts the capacity in half.

Hi @hamish15,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 can support printing on 11x17 paper from both trays, but automatic switching between trays might not be fully supported in the way you’d like for continuous 11x17 printing. Here’s a way to troubleshoot and potentially optimize this setup.
Confirm Tray Settings: Make sure that both Tray 1 and Tray 2 are explicitly set to the same paper size (11x17) and paper type in the printer’s control panel settings. This ensures the printer recognizes both trays as interchangeable for 11x17 printing.
Enable Automatic Tray Switching in Print Driver:
- Open the Printer Properties on your computer.
- Look for options under Paper/Quality or Features tab and make sure that Automatic Tray Selection is enabled.
- Save the settings and try sending a new print job to see if it picks up from Tray 2 when Tray 1 is empty.
Firmware Update: Sometimes, automatic tray switching issues can be firmware-related. Make sure your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. You can check for updates on HP’s official support page.
Workaround for Manual Switching: If the printer still doesn’t switch trays automatically, setting up two custom paper profiles in your print settings (one for each tray) might allow you to quickly switch trays without losing 11x17 capacity. Although this isn’t automatic, it’s a possible compromise.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for the response Alden. I have all of the settings you suggested in place and it doesn't make any difference. I have checked for firmware updates and everything is current. I am not really interested in a manual option because once i figure out tray is empty it is easier to install new paper than switch trays manually. Disappointing on HPs part.
