I continue to get a "Printer Failure" error message everytime I go to print. I have shut it off and turned it back on numerous times - even unplugged it and nothing seems to be working. The error message states "There is a problem with the printer or print system. Turn the printer off, then on. If you continue to get this message, contact HP. 0x6100004a"

This printer is only a couple years old and has been used very minimally. The printer/mfp I have is the HP OfficeJet 6978.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi @Nick_7979,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already tried some basic troubleshooting steps like power cycling the printer, which is a good start. The error message you're receiving indicates a problem with the printer or its print system.

Here are a few additional steps you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Check for paper jams: Even if you can't see a jam, try opening up the printer and checking for any small shreds of paper that might be stuck inside. Use a flashlight if necessary.
  • Inspect ink cartridges: Make sure all ink cartridges are properly installed and are not empty. Sometimes a poorly seated or empty cartridge can cause errors.
  • Reset the printer: Try performing a hard reset of the printer by unplugging it from the power source for about a minute, then plugging it back in and turning it on.
  • Update printer firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer on the HP support website. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve software-related issues.
  • Clean the printhead: If your printer has a removable printhead, you can try removing it and cleaning it according to the HP instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
