Hello Community,
I have and officejet pro 9020 and it is stuck in a loop. The problem is that whenever I turn the printer on it keeps looking for updates, after that I get a message that it has the latest updates and after pressing ok it shows the message cancelling and starts again. I cannot go past this point and I tried all the suggestions on HP website. I think it is a firmware issue.
Please help me out in this matter. Thanks!!

Hi @Johan1988,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
To better understand the issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 I need a few details.
- Have you tried performing a hard reset on the printer? If so, what steps did you take, and did it have any effect on the issue?
- Is the printer connected to a Wi-Fi network or via USB? If it’s on Wi-Fi, have you tried disconnecting it from the network to see if that resolves the looping issue?
- What exactly does the display screen show during the loop? Are there any error codes or additional messages besides the update notifications?
- Do you know which firmware version the printer is currently running? If you can access the settings, have you checked if there's a way to manually initiate a firmware update?
- Did the printer start exhibiting this behavior after a specific event, such as a recent update, power outage, or network change?
Here are some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 being stuck in a firmware update loop:
1. Perform a Power Reset:
- Turn off the printer and unplug the power cable from both the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug the cable back into the printer and the wall.
- Turn on the printer and check if it gets past the update screen.
2. Restart the Printer in Recovery Mode:
- Turn off the printer.
- Hold down the Wi-Fi and Cancel buttons (or a combination of other buttons depending on your model) and turn the printer back on.
- This should boot the printer into recovery mode, which can bypass the update loop and allow you to troubleshoot further.
3. Update Firmware via USB:
- Download the latest firmware for your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 from the HP Support website.
- Connect the printer to your computer via USB and run the firmware update tool on your computer.
- Ensure the firmware is updated manually to clear any corrupted files that may be causing the loop.
4. Disable Web Services:
- If the printer manages to start up after a reset, navigate to Settings > Web Services and disable web services temporarily.
- This may prevent the printer from continuously searching for updates.
5. Factory Reset the Printer:
- If the issue persists, perform a factory reset:
- From the printer control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
- This will reset the printer to its original settings and may clear the loop.
If these steps don't resolve the issue, contact phone support.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

Hello Elohi,
I did part of your suggestions, I enter into maintenance mode I think by pressing the power button and the home , a blue screen appear and from there I did the following:
1.- Partial reset
2.- Full reset
3.- enter user mode
there are other options but I just perform those.
There is one option " Flash from Drive". I wanted to do this but from the HP website the firmware available is a .EXE file, I do not know if this is the correct file since this is a windows filetype.
The machine updated with no interrruption, after the update it presented this problem. About the printer firmware version I did not keep track of that.
This is what happens in the machine:
1.- I turn it on and the hp logo appear
2.- Then it checks for an updated firmware.
3.- After some time it shows that it has the latest firmware.
4.- I press "OK" and then it shows "cancelling".
5.- It reboots and do the same process again and again.
I perfomed the power reset and no luck.
I hope this information is more useful to find a solution. Thank you for your time and support.

Hi @Johan1988,
Thank you for performing the recommended steps, I see that it has not helped.
Let's try updating the firmware from your PC.
To perform a forced firmware update for your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 All-in-One Printer on a Windows 10 (64-bit) PC, follow these steps:
1. Download the Latest Firmware
- Visit the HP Support Website.
- Search for your printer model (OfficeJet Pro 9020) and download the latest firmware available for your printer and operating system.
2. Install the Firmware
- Run the downloaded firmware file on your Windows 10 PC.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
- Ensure the printer is connected to the PC via USB or Wi-Fi during the update, and don’t power off the printer until the process is complete.
Once the update is done, your printer will restart, and the new firmware should be installed.
Keep me posted.

Hello Elohi.
I did the steps you suggested but had no luck, as you can see on the image I cannot update it. Also I sent you what the printer shows, so after It finishes looking for updates and then after showing the message "Latest update is currently installed" I press ok and then get the message "Cancelling", this constantly repeats.
The printer cannot be update from the pc. Is there any possiblity to update the printer via usb directly ? or do a downgrade to a previous version ?. Thank you for your time.
