HP ENVY 120 e-All-in-One Printer

When "upgrades" degrade the performance of my Envy 120, that's when I stop participating.

The new HP update lowers the max scan resolution from 1200 dpi to 600dpi. I paid for 1200dpi scan resolution, so I will not be "upgrading" to the new app.

Also, when first purchased I could simply click scan, print, or copy to use this device. Now, I am forced to log in to use it and am constantly badgered by hp marketing campaigns to "upgrade". Does hp really think customers appreciate this?

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

You did not include the Operating System / version you are using.

From the description of "click and scan", I might guess you are using a recent version of Windows.  Could be MacOS, I guess - maybe even HP Smart Mobile.

True - HP Smart requires that you sign into the application using your HP Account credentials.

The change from "recommended" to "required" was implemented at the end of 2020.

Assuming, for the sake of continuing, that you are using Windows (or even a supported version of MacOS),

The use of HP Smart is optional.

That means - If you don't want to use the app, you need not do so.

What else?

The printer hardware -- for example, scanning from the printer -- supports scanning at the lower end of what the printer software can do (to 300 dpi).

If you want to scan at  higher resolutions, scan the content using an appropriate scan software or application.

The Full Feature Software is still available for the printer.

HP ENVY 120 e-All-in-One Printer Full Feature Software and Drivers

The full driver printer software includes HP Scan.

The full driver does not require that you sign in to use the software to print or scan.

Basic Instructions - Install the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software

Preparation

  • If the printer software is still / already installed, Uninstall the printer software  from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features > Restart the computer and log in – Reference Uninstall HP printer software and drivers

>>> After the printer software is uninstalled, check that the printer is not still lurking in Devices and Printers

If the printer is listed, Right-Click on the printer and "Remove" > Restart the computer and sign in.

  • If using VPN, shut it off to install software.  NOTE >> If you don’t know what this is, you are not using a VPN – ignore this part.

  • Reminder:  If using USB cable between printer and computer, disconnect the cable before installing software.  Later... Connect the cable when instructed (near the end of the installation procedure).

  • Observation:  It is possible (assuming your Wireless Network is stable) that using a Wireless connection to install the printer software might work better than using an Ethernet Connection.   Personal choice - the Wireless connection method is recommended when you face insurmountable issues installing the software.

Installation

  • Download and Save the Full Feature Software installation package or the Easy Start Software
  • Open File Explorer
  • Navigate to the folder in which you saved the installation file  (likely Downloads)
  • Right-Click on the installation package and “Run as Administrator
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

You can say the same thing for the Apple app version.  it suffers the same "palsy".  After one scan, it goes to sleep forcing me to log-out and back in to scan the next document.  Pitiful!  Also, don't bother giving HP feed-back through the app.  After you spend your time providing legitimate responses, it will not let you submit it.  More wasted time equals insult to injury!

I've had HP printers for 35 years and everything used to be just fine.  Now, it appears HP's hosted servers are off behind the little animals most of the time and therefore unresponsive.

It may come as a shock to HP's marketing department, but I didn't buy a printer to give them something else to do figuring out what I do with my printer.
