HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28w Printer

Up dated the computer to a Mac min.  Now I can't get the hp software to find the printer.  The printer is connected with a usb cable.  If I use the add printer thru Mac it can find it but, I can't download the drive from HP to install it.  HP smart will search but can not locate the printer which is a HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28w Printer.  I did reinstall the software for Mac OS 15.

thanks in advance for any help

Hi @Ron383,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand how frustrating it is when a new computer setup doesn’t recognize your printer, especially when everything worked fine before. Let’s troubleshoot and get your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28w working on your Mac Mini.

  • When adding the printer manually through System Settings > Printers & Scanners, does it print at all, even without HP Smart?
  • Do you see any error messages when trying to install the HP drivers?
  • Is the USB connection detected under System Information > USB on your Mac?

This could also be the compatibility issues with your current OS.

However, lets try these steps.

Check USB Connection & Cable

  • Try a different USB port on your Mac Mini.
  • If using a USB-C adapter, ensure it's a data-compatible adapter (some only support charging).
  • Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac > System Report > USB to confirm if the printer is detected.

Manually Add the Printer with Generic Drivers

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners > Add Printer (+).
  • If your printer appears, select it, but instead of AirPrint, choose Generic PostScript Printer or HP LaserJet (if available).

Download HP Easy Start & HP Printer Drivers

  • Uninstall any existing HP software.
  • Download HP Easy Start from HP’s official site. or Click here
  • Run HP Easy Start and follow the setup instructions.

Reset Mac’s Printing System

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click anywhere in the printer list and select Reset Printing System.
  • Restart your Mac and re-add the printer.

Try Wireless Setup Instead of USB

  • If possible, connect your printer to Wi-Fi using the HP Smart app on another device.
  • Once connected, try adding it on your Mac using Add Printer and selecting it from the network.
