Despite universal scan software being available and installed for my HP smart tank 5106 I cannot get the hp scan app to allow scan to edittable text shortcut. Is there any way that I can get this option. I really need OCR.

My understanding is that there are still OCR packages available on the 'net from Adobe and other legitimate companies.

Should the following prove to be not what you seek or you wish not to use the option, you can certainly obtain OCR software from a number of legitimate sources.  Be careful - make sure any product you use is protecting your best interests and your privacy.

How to create a Searchable PDF file

If the OCR option you seek is not available in your HP Scan / HP Universal Scan software,

If, as in the case of this printer model, your printer is eligible for Smart Advance,

Try / Consider

Open HP Smart

Back track to the HP Smart main menu

Set up and Scan content as PDF

Before Saving...

Optionally Edit the scanned content > click Done to save any edit changes

In next options, select your created Shortcut to Save the data.
