HP smart wont login to HP services and hangs

HP Smart wont allow login to HP account (and therefore I cant scan using HP smart).  Since the recent March 2022 upgrade when I open HP smart (which previously worked fine with my two HP printers) it asks me to 'login in to HP services'.  However no browser window is ever opened for this dialogue (neither chrome nor explorer) so I can never complete thelogin.  If I open a browser window and log into my HP account this doesnt unlock the HP smart dialogue.  As a result I can't scan using HP smart, cant print using HP smart and can't see printer status using HP smart

OMG to fix this problem you have to exit Safari, then reopen Safari and then the HP dialogue appears and you can login.  This happens even though Safari is not my default browser on the mac! Even if you have Safari already open the dialogue doesnt appear and you have to close all windows and exit the app to get the Hp dialogue to appear!

HP you need the fix HP 'smart' - it should use the default browser, it should be able to open a browser window without needing me to restart safari, it should be able to login if I'm already logged in via a browser......
