HP 4520
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My 4520 all in one just stopped printing in colour a few weeks ago.  There is not even an option in the print dialog.  It also stopped auto-duplexing and does it manually now.  Lots of old postings about this (2017 etc) but not much new.  I have tried updating software.

Hi @Hughie1247

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

Try making a standalone copy in color and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.

Install the printer using Windows built-in driver (Uninstall the previously installed driver)

Refer to this document to know how.

Try printing in color and 2 sided. To know how to print on both sides, refer to this document.

If the issue persists, Install the printer using TCP/IP port

1) Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the wireless icon at the bottom of the printer screen
2) Right-click your printer, select Printer Properties, click the Ports tab and then click Add Port.
3) Select Standard TCP/IP Port, and then click New Port.
4) Follow the instructions to add a new port using the information listed on the Network Configuration Report.
5) Try printing.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I can print a colour copy as you suggested.  I have tried all that you suggested with drivers from Windows and HP Smart and full featured drivers from HP. I did get a couple of documents to print in colour, but then it stopped again.  The Colour option on the print dialog is never there.

I alos tried duplex printing and that only does manual.

All of these features worked for well over a year and just suddenly stopped.  It may have been associated with a Windows update, but I am not sure.  I would just like to be able to print in colour and duplex.  I have been an HP Instant INk subscrober for a while, but it is not worth it anymore.

I would just like a new printer that works.  can you get me one as replacement, or I will look at Canon or Brother.

Any more ideas?

@Hughie1247, I understand your concern. As this is not a hardware issue with the printer, the printer need not be replaced. This is an issue with the printer driver and updated version of Win 10 OS.

Install the printer driver compatible with Windows 7 on your Win 10 PC and check if the issue persists.

Uninstall the previously installed drivers, click here to download the driver.

Let me know how this goes.

I tried to uninstall the 4520 Basic Driver and it goes so far, then I get this message, hit OK  and it does not uninstall.

Have you logged in as an 'Administrator'? Use the administrator account and try again.

You may install the Win 7 driver on your Win 10 PC which is backward compatible. Installation should not be affected by the error.

Let me know how this goes.

I have logged in as Admin and loaded full featured software again and it still does not print a document in colour.or show any option for Colour in the Printer Preferences dialog box.  The Printer Test did a single colour .

I have not tried loading a Win 7 driver.  Is that likely to make a difference?
