Hello @Henny-B – Hope you are well 🙂
Thank you for becoming an HP Forum member. It is a dynamite location to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others.
I see that you are having issues while printing from MS Word & Excel programs. Going through the post, it looks like some drivers conflict between the printer drivers and the application software. I would suggest to first reinstall the printer drivers and then if the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall the application software.
- Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
- Restart your computer.
- Now click on http://hp.care/2ggI83k and enter the printer model number to download and install the printer drivers.
- Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
- Then restart the computer and then try printing again.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.
Thank you and have a great day!
Cheers 🙂

Hello,
Thank yu for the update.
It looks like an issue with the MS Word application package. You can try the following steps:
1) Go to Control panel - Devices and printers - Right-click on Officejet 5742 and select "Printing preferences". Click on "Advanced" tab and make sure the "Advanced printing features" are enabled. Now try to print. If the issue persists, go to the next step.
2) Go to Control panel - Programs and features - Locate Microsoft office package - Right-click and select "Change" option. You will get an MS Office pop-up window. Select the "Repair" option and select "Continue". Follow the on-screen instructions to repair the office package. Once done try to print and check.
3) Also, make sure you are selecting the correct printer name while printing. Once you click on print, check the printer name and make sure it is the correct printer.
Let me know how that goes. Good luck!
Cheers 🙂

Hello, @Henny-B
Thanks for the update.
No, the issue is not with the "lock" symbol on the printer properties. That is the default window. I believe the issue is with the printer drivers. Try the following steps:
1. Install the basic print drivers:
- Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
- Restart your computer.
- Now click on http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/oj5740/OJ5740__Basicx64_1092.exe to download and install the basic printer drivers.
- Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
- Restart the computer and then try to print.
2. Install and use the Windows built-in drivers:
- Restart you PC & the printer. Connect the USB cable.
- Go to Control Panel - Devices and printers - Click on "Add printer".
- While the Windows is searching for the printer, click "The printer I want is not listed".
- Now click the option which says "Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings".
- In the next windows, select "Use an existing port". "LPT1" will be selected by default. From the drop down menu change that to "USB..." port and click next.
- When the page prompts for the drivers, select "Windows update". The driver list will be updated.
- Click HP, Hewlett Packard, or Hewlett-Packard in the Manufacturer pane, and then click the name of your printer in the Printers pane.
- Go to http://hp.care/2bYE4kP and follow the "Step 3" for instructions.
- Restart the computer and then try to print.
3. Try the online Word troubleshooting:
If the issue still persists, then try the steps mentioned here: http://hp.care/2dakge6
Let me know if that helps. Thank you!
Cheers 🙂
