I bought a used HP M605 printer in a resale store.  My computer recognizes the printer, but fails to connect to it.  Printer prints fine from printer menu. What am I doing wrong?

@Paul865, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP M605 printer.

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution. We hope our assistance has been helpful!

If your HP M605 printer is recognized by your computer but fails to connect, there are a few steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

  1. Check Connection Method:

    • Ensure that you are using the correct connection method (USB, wired, or wireless). Each method has specific requirements and setups that you can follow.
  2. Verify Connection:

    • For USB connections, ensure that the cable is securely attached to both the printer and the computer. Try using a different USB port or cable if necessary.
    • For wired network connections, ensure that the Ethernet cable is securely connected to the printer and your router or switch.
    • For wireless connections, ensure that the printer is connected to the same network as your computer. You can check the wireless connection from the printer’s network settings menu.
  3. Printer Drivers:

    • Make sure you have installed the latest drivers for the HP M605 printer.
  4. Printer Settings:

    • Access the printer settings on your printer menu and verify that there are no network or connection issues reported.
  5. Restart Devices:

    • Sometimes simply restarting your computer and the printer can resolve connectivity issues.
  6. HP Print and Scan Doctor:

    • Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility, a free tool from HP, to diagnose and resolve common printing and connectivity issues. It can identify and help resolve connection problems.
  7. Firewall or Security Software:

    • Check if your firewall or antivirus software is blocking the printer connection. You may need to create an exception for the printer connection in your security software settings.

I hope this helps!

Take care and have an amazing day!
