My HP6155e prints and scans fine, but will only print if started prior to booting PC. If I start PC first, I am able to scan, to see ink status and whether low or paper, but not print. The 'HP Smart" app shows the printer as ready, but when printing, nothing happens and no error messages. If i reboot PC at that point, printing works fine. I can live with this, but would like to eliminate the need to reboot PC whenever I need to print, as I have the printer on a different floor in the house and it is usually turned off. Thanks for all tips.

Hi @davidfromny,
Thank you for reaching out! The HP ENVY 6155e is designed to be energy efficient, so leaving it on in sleep mode is generally safe and recommended.
If you don’t want it on 24/7, you can set Auto-Off after a period of inactivity:
- On the printer screen, go to Setup > Preferences > Auto-Off
- Choose a timeout (e.g., 2-4 hours of inactivity).
- Enable Wake on Print Job so it turns on when needed.
This way, you balance energy savings, printhead health, and convenience without unnecessary wear and tear.
Let me know if you need help adjusting these settings!
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi @davidfromny,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I can understand how inconvenient it must be to restart your PC every time you want to print. Let's work on resolving this so you can print without needing to reboot.
Possible Causes:
- The printer might not be properly initializing when powered on after the PC.
- There could be an issue with how Windows detects the printer after startup.
- A communication issue between the printer and the PC, possibly due to driver settings or the HP Smart app.
1. Restart the Print Spooler Service (Instead of Restarting the PC)
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Scroll down and find Print Spooler.
- Right-click on Print Spooler and select Restart.
- Try printing again.
2. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor.
- It will automatically check for issues and attempt to fix them.
3. Update or Reinstall the Printer Driver
- Open Device Manager (Press Win + X, then select Device Manager).
- Expand Printers and right-click on your HP 6155e.
- Select Update driver and choose Search automatically.
- If the issue persists, uninstall the printer driver and reinstall it from HP’s support page.
4. Add the Printer as a TCP/IP Printer (If Using Wi-Fi)
- Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Click Add a Printer > The printer that I want isn’t listed.
- Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
- Enter the printer’s IP address (find it in the HP Smart app under Printer Settings).
- Follow the prompts and try printing again.
5. Check Power Settings (For USB Connections)
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click each USB Root Hub > Properties.
- Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
- Click OK and restart your PC.
Let me know if this helps or if the issue persists! 😊
Take care and have a good day.

First, a big thanks for your highly informative response. I went through each suggested approach, but ultimate failure. When I tried the TCP/IP approach, Windows could not find the printer, and after clicking 'windows update' it found a dozen HP printers, but not this one. I have spent many hours on this and, since I don't use the printer daily, I'll live with it as it is. At least it works when started first. It was suggested by a neighbor that I could just leave it on all the time, letting it go to hibernate mode. That troubles me, as I'm not used to leaving electronic items running 24/7. I will appreciate your insight on that strategy. Again, thanks for attempting to resolve this.

THANKS for the suggestion. The printer menu isn't an exact match. There is a Settings>General>Energy that is set to go to sleep after 5 minutes. The options you mentioned are not there, although my assumption is that this accomplishes what you propose. This does work, as I already have left the printer idle for several hours, yet it prints when there is print job in the queue. For that reason, I'll mark this resolved. Somewhere, there is a bug in the system, but I can live with this. Thank you.

Please note that I marked this resolved because nobody had the solution for the fact that the software DOES NOT WORK properly. I 'solved' the problem by just leaving the printer on, which is a poor substitute. This achieves the objective of being able to use the printer, but represents a failure of the HP software to function properly.
