Hello - I am having problems w/ my hp6962 printer, bypassing the cartridge setup. I accidently did an OOBE reset, (should have done a Semi reset). Printer will not pass menu for cartridge setup to continue initializing. Been w/ HP-Instant Ink for over 3 years. Tried to access printer in (engineering mode (4 taps on previous cursor button)) Still no response. Removed cartridges and powered down, unplugged, waited 30 seconds, powered up again. Printer still will not move from the cartridge setup screen. On the panel, the Wifi is grayed out. Printer is already registered, and all cartridges are shipped to me from HP. Is there any way to recover from this or bypass the cartridge setup? Any suggestions - Was hoping not to get another printer since this one still works. Thanks. Lyrus T.

Hi @LTONE,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like your HP OfficeJet 6962 printer is stuck in the setup phase after performing an OOBE (Out of Box Experience) reset, which reverted the printer to its factory state. Since you're registered with HP Instant Ink and the printer is stuck on the cartridge setup screen, the issue is likely related to the fact that the OOBE reset requires "setup" cartridges (special ones typically used during initial printer setup). Here's what you can try to bypass or resolve the issue.
Semi-Full Reset (Instead of OOBE reset):
- Since the OOBE reset caused the issue, a semi-full reset could help. This type of reset wipes out user settings without reverting it fully to factory settings.
- To perform a semi-full reset:
- Turn off the printer.
- Hold the following buttons on the printer's control panel:
- Cancel (X) button
- Back Arrow button
- While holding these buttons, power the printer back on.
- Continue holding the buttons for about 15-20 seconds until the reset menu appears.
- Select the option for "Semi-Full Reset."
- The printer will reset and reboot.
Check for Engineering Menu Access:
- You mentioned trying the engineering mode (4 taps on the previous cursor button). Some printers also use a combination of key presses. You can attempt to access the service menu using this alternative:
- Tap the back arrow icon on the touch screen 4 times in a row rapidly.
- This should enter the printer's hidden engineering menu, where you might find an option for "NVRAM Initialization" or "Skip Setup".
- Be cautious when selecting options in this menu, as it can impact other settings.
Use Setup Cartridges:
- If the printer is stuck asking for setup cartridges, you might need to install them to proceed. Since you're an HP Instant Ink customer, your regular cartridges should have worked, but due to the OOBE reset, the printer expects setup cartridges.
Firmware Update:
- A firmware update might clear the setup lock if the printer can be accessed over USB (even though Wi-Fi is grayed out). You can check for a firmware update from the HP Smart app on a computer or directly from HP's website.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
