HP 8620e Wireless Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I try to install OJ8620_198.exe on a NEW Windows 10 installation, the driver never gets past to the first phase in which the basic driver is installed. It stops and does not even try to detect the printer. The only thing I get is the error message shown below (sorry in German). I have had several problems with this driver in the past, where the drive could not detect the printer. This time it is far worse: the setup simply fails. I have tried ALL the suggestions posted and nothing works.

Needless to say, any help would be greatly appreciated!

@merinber, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand you are not able to install the printer driver on the Win 10 computer.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and fix any driver issue

Click here to download the file. Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and click on 'Fix printing'.

If the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Use the HP Smart app to print and scan from your Win PC

Click here to download and know more about the app.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi,

I've responded twice to your mail. Did you receive them?  I do not see them here.

Hi,

I replied to your mail from Outlook, which you apparently did not receive. This was my original reply.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my problem. I have tried all your suggestions at least twice and, believe me, many more. I have come to the conclusion that the full driver package is no longer compatible with Windows 10. Windows stumbles over the file HPRestStub.Inf and terminates the installation. I finally installed the printer driver manually which also allows me to scan. The fax functionality, however, does not work.

If you have any further insights, they would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Glad to know that you are able to print and scan now. Fax features for the printer control panel need no software.

Only if you want to fax from your computer screen, a full-featured printer driver should be installed.

Create a new user account on the computer and try to install the full-feature printer software from here.

To know how to create a new user account, refer to this document.

Let me know how it goes.

I tried using the Windows Fax and Scan program. it allows me to scan, but not fax. Then I installed HP Smart Scan, which (apparently) allows me to fax but not scan! This is extremely frustrating. Then I tried again with the full driver, but it terminated with the same error (see above) at the same point in the installation.

I never had these problems with earlier versions of Windows 10 and I am thoroughly frustrated!

Hi,

Support basically told me to forget the OJ8620_198.exe file and simply use HP Smart. I uninstalled or deleted all traces of HP (for the umpteenth time) and then reinstalled the HP Smart app. Before, I had manually installed the printer driver and was not able to scan with HP Smart. This time, I let HP Smart install the driver and now scanning finally works!

It appears that HP Smart can be used (should be used?) as a complete substitute for the driver. At any rate, I'm happy that at least that works again.

Thanks for your asisstance.
