I have encountered the same problem with my Photosmart 7510 after loading the software disk supplied.      I subsequently found that if I turn the printer on first and then turn on the pc or laptop and log on, the recurring timer does not flicker on and off, even if the printer is then turned off.    However, once the laptop or pc is turned off, it is necessary to repeat the same operation each time, ie turn the printer on first.    It seems to me that the problem is caused by the laptop or pc attempting to communicate wirelessly with the printer, but if the printer has not been turned before the laptop or pc it cannot do so and is therefore attempting to make wireless connection with the printer every 5-10 seconds, hence the recurring timer.      Once the printer is turned on and the wireless connection is established, the recurring timer stops, and the printer can be turned off if you wish, after which the recurring timer does re-appear whilst the laptonp or pc is in use.       Anyway this has given me a temporary fix, which I have used successfully for the passed two days, and it is such a minor matter to have to turn the printer on first.      Until HP find a permanent fix solution without all the hassle I have read, I suggest you all give this a try and let me know if it helps you.   I am running on Windows 7 on 32 bit

Brian thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately I work away from home a lot so do not have the opportunity to connect my printer before turning on my laptop. In frustration today I used my windows 7 remove printers function to remove my 8600 and an older hp printer that I still use from time to time. Unfortunately removing the printers did not delete the hpnetworkcommunicator.exe file. It is still active when I run task manager. Do you have any idea how we engage HP to acknowledge / resolve this problem. Thanks again for your suggestion. John

All, could it be that you have installed the scanning option on more then 1 PC ? I have deactivated the scan option now on all except on the one which is connected by LAN cable to the (wifi)-router the printer is using as well. This seems to have solved the problem for me and now even my network stays intact, which before crashed al the time.

Many thanks for your help, I reinstalled the software onto each machine disabling the "Scan to Computer" this seams to have worked.
Hopefully HP will have a fix soon.

I had changed my Officejet Pro 8600 Plus ip address to a static ip. I started to see this issue after that. After seeing the notes about scanning to the computer, I tried to initiate a scan. It gave me an error saying that the ip address was wrong. Under the start menu/HP/HP Officejet Pro 8600 I found a selection "Update IP Address". I turned the printer on and performed the update. I'm no longer seeing the spinning hourglass.

Hey all,

I have a SOLUTION to the problem...it's actually rather simple.

I first noticed that the hourglass on my mouse (blue ring for win7) kept spinning and when I pulled up my task manager I noticed the hpcommunicater.exe kept flickering on and off.

Now my laptop had previously been set up with this printer on a wireless router...HOWEVER...my cable company just installed a new modem with built-in wifi and I had not yet connected my printer to it.

I believe that the problem occurred because my computer had a pending print job and it was constantly trying to find the printer....once I connected the printer to the router, the print job was able to complete itself and now that my laptop is able to communicate with the printer I'm no longer experiencing the issue.

SO...either reconnect your printer to the wireless router OR just try cancelling any pending print jobs and see if that works.  Hope this helps 🙂

My issue is that I travel a lot so am not often connected to my home printer. The problem persisted and was actually worse when I was away from my home wireless network.

The solution that worked for me came from an HP employee. It was an instant and lasting success. I went into settings and changed the 'monitor ink levels' option from 'check all the the time' to 'only check when I print'. This resolved the problem which I assume was caused by my laptop trying to find a printer when i was not even connected to my home network.

Check that your printer is connected to the wireless network. In my case, it had lost the connection after the router was rebooted.

If the icon on the printer has a yellow warning you need to reconnect it.

From the printer screen,  select Setup the Network. Select Wireless Setup Wizard, etc.

Once the printer can be discovered again, HPNetworkCommunciator.exe will stop crashing and restarting.

The bug appears to be in the printer's firmware.
