I have a PDF sized 8.5" x 5.5" (half letter / portrait) and the corresponding paper, and also created a custom paper size with those dimensions in the Windows print dialog.

Now, when I load that paper into tray 2, on the printer mini screen there is no preset for that size, but there is an "Any Size" (huh..??) option and a "Custom" option which for some reason does not allow me to specify the loaded size (..???). With either of these two options chosen, whenever I try to print using the above mentioned custom format in the print dialog the printer always seems to expect standard Letter. The HP "Smart" software has very little to offer when it comes to custom paper sizes.

How can I solve this seemingly simple task of creating half letter printouts..?

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help.

This printer does not support custom size printing as per the specifications here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c05689030#AbT9

Let me know if this helps.
