HP LaserJet 1020 Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

After some struggling I succeeded in getting my durable HP LaserJet 1020 to work within Windows 11 Pro 24H2!  I had tried earlier, following the instructions that came with the printer, but Win11 did not like the driver disk.
Then the Windows OS was removed and reinstalled for other reasons. That may have cleaned any debris from the first try. The other evening, on a lark, I opened Windows 11 Settings \ Bluetooth & Devices \ Printers & Scanners \ Add a Printer or Scanner - and clicked the blue "Add Device" button. I do not recall whether I had a USB cable between the Win11 computer and the printer at the time - sorry. Windows offered a list of printer manufacturers, and when I selected HP it gave a long list of HP printers. The 1020 was on the list; I selected that. Windows then prompted me to insert the CD with the drivers. I had that disk, and inserted it. Yup, the original copyright 2005 physical disk. Windows processed that. For some reason the first attempt failed but simply telling it Try Again succeeded. Now the 1020 seems to work fine with this Windows 11 machine. Following other sequences of steps never worked. Good Luck!

Welcome to HP Support Community, @DotsRight

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Wow  that’s fantastic news! 🎉
Huge congratulations on getting your durable setup working — and thank you so much for sharing the journey in such a helpful and encouraging way.

It’s great to hear that HP LaserJet 1020 is now printing smoothly on Windows 11 Pro 24H2, especially after earlier challenges with the driver disk. Sometimes a fresh reinstall really does act like a spring-clean for the system, quietly clearing out those invisible leftovers from past driver attempts — and it’s wonderful that the built-in device list and a simple “Try Again” made all the difference this time!

We also love that you dusted off the original 2005 driver CD — that’s a testament to both the printer’s durability and your patience & persistence. 🦸‍♀️💪

Experiences like this are incredibly valuable to others who may be trying to revive classic, reliable hardware on modern systems.

Thank you again for taking the time to write this — your message will definitely inspire and guide fellow users facing similar hurdles. 💙

Wishing you many years of smooth printing ahead, and thanks for being part of the community that makes support better for everyone! 🚀

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
