I had issues connecting my printer to the internet. I contacted what looked like a genuine HP website. I contacted the chat and they put a technician on to me.  He was very thorough and took his time explaining every stage. He left me with a note that listed what he had done and once finished sent me a bill for £125. He did work on my laptop remotely. I paid on a credit card and received appropriate emails confirming the bill and my payment via payoneer.com.

 

Although all the issues appear to have been sorted, I have little knowledge of computer technology , but alarm bells rang. I will write off the fee - put it down to a bad choice, but concerned there maybe other issues like stolen financial information etc. What should I do to protect myself.

Without knowing the website you were on it is hard to say. Normally I would say definitely you were scammed but the billing amount is not great and you do not state that they tried to sell you any AntiVirus or other protection software which is the normal behavior we expect to see in cases like this.

He did try to sell me Wolf Secure, but I declined the offer. The email address that the payment went to led me to a computer repair company in Delhi. It seems to me that it is dodgy rather than an outright scam. The problem with my laptop and printer has been solved. I will keep an eye on my bank account and have changed my important passwords. Keeping my fingers crossed!!
