My trusty little Office Jet 8600 just stopped working. HP is offering zero support as it is waaaaaay out of warranty. Cannot donload any new firmwear or anything. Any suggestions other than the garbage. And yes, I have powered down, unplugged for a few, replugged and powered back up... ARGH....

Hi @AU522,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It’s frustrating when a reliable printer suddenly stops working, especially when it's out of warranty. Here are a few troubleshooting steps that might help you revive your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 before considering replacement.

Firmware and Driver Updates

  • While HP may no longer officially support the OfficeJet Pro 8600, you can still manually download the latest drivers or firmware that was available at the time.
  • Visit the HP Customer Support website and enter your printer model to find older versions of firmware or drivers. Even if you can't update firmware, reinstalling drivers might resolve software-related issues.
  • If possible, download the latest compatible version and reinstall it on your computer.

Reset the Printer

A partial reset can sometimes fix various issues:

  • Soft Reset: Power down the printer, unplug it, and leave it for at least 10 minutes before plugging it back in and powering it up.
  • Semi-Full Reset: To perform a more thorough reset:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Press and hold the # and 6 buttons while turning the printer back on.
    3. Keep holding the buttons until you see the screen light up. This will reset the printer to its default settings. You may need to reconfigure your Wi-Fi and settings afterward.

Printer Hard Reset

  • If your printer still won't function after a reset, try a hard reset:
    1. Power off the printer.
    2. Disconnect all cables (USB, power, network) from the printer.
    3. Leave it unplugged for at least 10-15 minutes.
    4. Reconnect only the power cable and turn it back on.

Check for Hardware Issues

  • Printhead: If the printhead is clogged or faulty, this could prevent the printer from working properly. Cleaning or replacing the printhead might help, especially if you’ve been getting print quality issues or errors about the printhead before.
  • Ink Cartridges: Ensure the ink cartridges are seated correctly, not expired, and recognized by the printer.

Try a Different Connection Method

  • If you usually connect via Wi-Fi, try using a USB cable or Ethernet (if available) to see if the issue is related to connectivity.

HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility. Even for older models, this tool might diagnose issues and help you resolve them.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
