Failed to install on 1/9/2026 - 0x800f020b (Has been failing since 12/5/2025)
This Driver update is for a USB attached HP printer. I do not have an USB attach;ed HP printer, just have wireless HP printers.
How can I fix this problem?

Hi,
Thank you for the response.
I understand you have an HP OfficeJet 8720 that supports USB, even though you’ve never connected it by USB, and you’re seeing a repeated Windows Update failure for an HP USB driver. Let’s go through a few steps to explain why this happens and how to stop it.
Why the HP 8720 can trigger this update
Even if you only use the printer wirelessly, Windows detects that the HP 8720 has USB capability.
Because of that, Windows Update offers a generic HP USB driver, even when no USB cable has ever been connected.
What the error code means
Error 0x800f020b means Windows tried to install a driver for hardware that is not currently present.
Since the printer is not connected by USB, the update fails harmlessly but keeps retrying.
Confirm the printer is installed as wireless only
Go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
Select your HP 8720 and confirm it shows as Network / Wireless, not USB.
Remove unused USB driver references
Open Device Manager.
Click View → Show hidden devices, then expand Printers and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
If you see any greyed-out HP USB or “USB Printing Support” entries, right-click and uninstall them.
Clean old printer driver packages
Open Print Server Properties (from Printers & scanners → Printer properties).
Go to the Drivers tab and remove any HP drivers listed as USB or Class Driver that are not in use.
Restart the Print Spooler
Open Services, restart Print Spooler, and wait 10–15 seconds.
This clears cached references that cause Windows Update to retry the USB driver.
Hide the specific Windows Update
Download Microsoft’s Show or Hide Updates troubleshooter.
Hide Hewlett-Packard – USB – 58.2.1778.23178 so Windows no longer attempts to install it.
Optional: prevent future confusion
Do not connect the HP 8720 to the PC with a USB cable, even temporarily.
A single USB connection can register the device as USB and cause the update to return.
What you don’t need to do
You do not need to uninstall your wireless printer.
You do not need to change anything on the printer itself.
Your wireless printing and scanning will continue to work normally.
I hope this helps.

Hi @GarLib,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand your Windows Update keeps failing to install an HP USB printer driver even though you only use wireless HP printers. Let’s go through a few steps to stop the error and clean up the update attempt.
Understand why this update appears
Windows Update pushes generic HP USB drivers even if your printer is wireless.
The error 0x800f020b means Windows can’t find the expected USB hardware, so the update fails safely.
Confirm there is no USB HP printer installed
Go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
Remove any HP printer listed as USB, Class, or Generic USB, if present.
Disconnect hidden USB printer entries
Open Device Manager → expand Universal Serial Bus controllers and Printers.
Enable View → Show hidden devices and remove any greyed-out HP USB printer entries.
Clear pending printer driver packages
Open Print Server Properties (from Printers & scanners → Printer properties).
Go to the Drivers tab and remove unused HP USB or Class drivers.
Reset the Windows print spooler
Restart the Print Spooler service from Windows Services.
This clears stuck driver references that trigger repeated update attempts.
Pause Windows Update temporarily
Go to Settings → Windows Update and pause updates for 1 week.
This prevents the same driver from retrying while cleanup completes.
Hide the problematic update
Use Microsoft’s Show or Hide Updates tool to hide
Hewlett-Packard – USB – 58.2.1778.23178 so Windows no longer attempts to install it.
Confirm your wireless printers still work
Test printing from your HP wireless printers.
Wireless printing does not require this USB driver, so functionality is unaffected.
Why this does not indicate a system fault
This is a non-critical driver mismatch, not a hardware or OS issue.
Windows Update is offering a driver your system does not need.
I hope this helps.
