Hi @DuskMartian,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e printer requiring setup cartridges typically indicates that the printer has not completed its Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) setup. Here’s how you can address the issue.

Verify Setup Cartridges:
Ensure you are using the setup cartridges that originally came with the printer. These cartridges are specifically programmed for the initial setup. If you no longer have them, you may need to contact HP Support to order replacements.

OOBE Bypass (If Applicable):
In some cases, there may be an option to bypass the OOBE mode, but this is not always available or supported on newer models. Here’s how you can attempt it:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Press and hold the back button (↩️) and the cancel button () simultaneously.
  • Turn the printer back on while still holding the buttons.
  • Release the buttons when the printer powers on and enters a maintenance or bypass menu.
  • Navigate through the options to find an OOBE bypass or reset option.

Perform a Factory Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect it from power.
  • Press and hold the power button while plugging the printer back in.
  • Keep holding the power button until the printer starts a reset sequence.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to restart the setup process.

Use Non-Setup Cartridges with HP Smart App:
If the setup cartridges are unavailable, try:

  • Downloading and installing the HP Smart app on your PC or mobile device.
  • Adding the printer to the app and attempting a firmware update. In some cases, this may allow the printer to accept regular cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
